524CE
« on: June 30, 2021, 12:20:43 PM »
All,

Looking for general thoughts on a Taylor 524CE.  Might pick one up this weekend, and I will have a chance to ply it.  Played a 324CE a while back.  I did like the tonal quality.  So the question is for those who own or have played a 524, can I expect a fairly warm tone with a slightly deeper low end.  My 224dlx does have a very deep low end, it really thumps.  For those who own, does the tone warm as it ages?

Thanks in advance,
M

524 is really great.  Earlier this year I got the chance to play this, the 324BE, and the regular 324 back to back.  Almost no difference with my ham handed strumming, though the standard might have had the crispest sound.  For my fingerstyle, I thought the 524 and 324 BE were practically identical in tone - they were very slightly warmer than the standard - this should not be a surprise as the urban ash has been compared to great Honduran mahogany.  If I had to choose between them I would take the 524 because it is less expensive and I just don’t get along with the silent satin finish (too slippery).

i’ll preface to say i’m not a fan of hardwood tops (hog/koa) they sound very compressed to my ear.

that being said, the 300 series and up have a slightly wider nut than the 100s and 200s - 1.75” vs 1 11/16

for warmth - i’m in love with cedar tops, you can specify any standard production model to use cedar - i did that with my 2011 914ce, which is cedar/eir

i also love lutz, it has of lot of mid range “bark” and “growl”

i would give those tops a try :)
