Thanks to everyone who answered my call for advice, but my wife's opinion wins out. The guitar is gorgeous and sounds as good as it looks.

The arm bevel is such a nice feature, and the Gotoh 510 tuners are awesome.

I'm curious as to the difference. I traded my 714 for an 814 for the more comfortable arm rest, but not sure if it is a radius or bevel. I do know that it's not as pronounced as the one my my AD10, but still much more comfortable than the 714.

To the OP, beautiful guitar. If my store had one, I would have probably brought it home, but I'm happy with the 814.

Thanks. I plan to keep my wife permanently, but I’d already had that plan even before the 914. We’ve been married 41 years, it’s too late to have to break myself in to someone new.

I’m with dbvirago. I’m not sure of the difference between a bevel and a radius. It’s a 2020 so it has whatever came from the factory last year. I know it makes it more comfortable though.

The bevel is just that, a bevel, and is quite labor intensive to do.  The radius is a rounded edge, and is easier from a production standpoint. Maybe I (or someone) can post pics of the two.

Okay, then what I have on the Academy 10 is a bevel. On the 814, it is finished to look like a bevel but is a rounded edge. If you look at both from the front, they look the same. But if you look down from the neck, you can see a definite bevel on the AD10. Wonder why they have that nice bevel on their low-end guitar but not on the 814. The 714 didn't have a sharp edge, but not as rounded as the 814. Looking at them, I could hardly tell the difference, but after playing for a couple of hours, it's obvious.

FWIW, Taylor has pointed out (somewhere, can't recall but I know I saw it) the structural difference between the simple bevel on the Academy and that on the 800+ and BE guitars.  The former is a far simpler approach to achieve what the latter does, where the latter is clearly more labor intensive.

I make no judgments here, simply stating that there is a reason that bevel on the 800+ guitars adds cost.  That said, big kudos to Taylor for adding this very worthwhile feature to their budget line as it makes them that much more attractive to any player, not just beginners!

Yeah, I thought about it and considering the AD10 has a laminate side, I imagine that would make the bevel much easier.

When my wife asked why the first one costs so much less, I said, "Well, it's plywood, so... "


At any rate, the 814 is far more comfortable than the 714. This store had about 150 acoustic guitars and this was only one of two that had that feature. The other was a Maestro, and the bevel abruptly ended about where my elbow sat, leaving a sharp corner, making the rest of it moot.
