NGD Postponed NOW BACK ON TRACK!
« on: March 18, 2020, 06:36:12 PM »
My new Taylor 714 delivered to my FGS (no longer local), Martin Music in Memphis. As Eric Martin was getting ready to do the requested after-market changes on the guitar, he noticed a slight dimple in the finish on the top. He contacted Taylor, who advised him that this happens maybe three times a year amidst all the shipping that Taylor does globally. Apparently, there was a small bump under the top of the case (under the lining) that pressed against the guitar during shipping. Taylor has put it on a fast track to be returned to the factory where they will replace the case and repair the finish. If they cannot repair it to their quality standard, they will build me a new guitar. It’s a bit disappointing, but it’s yet another good story about Taylor’s stellar customer service. And as usual, Eric Martin provided "above and beyond" management of this project as he has always done in the past. IMO, he's the best!

6/4 Update: Taylor had received the guitar, but was then shut down due to the pandemic! They have reopened and repaired the dimple. It is now back at Martin Music for installation of aftermarket items. It should ship to me on Monday and be in my hands by Thursday - woo-hoo! Here's a photo of the guitar at Martin Music:

That bites. But at least it was caught right away. Just have to keep telling yourself it's for the best. And you'll be able to appricate it more when you finally get it home.

I agree on the customer service being top shelf at Taylor.  They always have and that is a rarity these days.  Plus I have found Eric to be the best when I have dealt with him as well.
The way it is unfolding so far is much better than for you to find the flaw, then have to deal with the shipping and handling.

I had something similar happen to one of my new Taylors. It finally arrived, to find that there was a 1" long line of seepage of glue along the fretboard were you would put your thumb on top. It was quite noticeable, given the dark mahogany wood and the dark fretboard binding. I said it was unacceptable, and it was sent back. 8 weeks later, I was sent a new guitar that was perfect. A bummer to have to wait, but worth it in the end. Plus you have a story to share. ;)

Thanks for all your support, gang!

I'm hoping that they can fix the dimple (I've seen them do some magic on finish repairs with some of my other guitars - that photo-cure process really makes repairs much easier.) That way, it'll come back a lot sooner. We'll see...

Fingers crossed that they can repair it and get it to you quickly. Sorry to hear of the delay, but no better company to be dealing with on an issue like this.

Yeah, I had this happen to me (although not apparently caused by the case) on a Custom GA I had built.

Taylor will do what's called a "drop fill" and fill in the dimple. As long as it's truly a dimple, meaning the stain and wood weren't compromised (and that would just mean a more complex fix) they'll fix this like new, you won't be able to see it.

Eric described it as a "tiny dimple". Hopefully, that means that the repair will be the simpler version.

I had the same thing happen on a 614ce Builders Edition about 18 months ago, right when that model was released.  The 1st thing I noticed when I opened the case were 2 dimples about 1" apart.  As the OP said, it was the "case's fault".  I could feel 2 protrusions, presumably staples, under the felt lining in the exact spot where that part of the case would close on the top of the guitar.

I bought from Sweetwater, and they made the swap to a new guitar with no hassle at all.  In fact, because the 614ce BE was so new, I had to wait ~3 weeks for the replacement, and they let me hold onto the blemished guitar in the meantime.  Superb service.

Here's the guitar as it came into Martin Music. Don't know if this will be the one I eventually get, but it sure is purdy!
