Taylor Hard Bag vs Gig Bag
« on: November 22, 2017, 04:27:47 PM »
What would be the difference, would anyone know?

My GS-Mini Gig Bag is kind of well padded.

Recently I bought a Taylor Gig-Bag for my 814, and noticed it is not padded like the GS-Mini Gig Bag.

The hard bag is stiffer, much more protective, and weighs a little more.

The GSM has a hard-bag, not a gig-bag. The hard-bag is much more substantial in padding, has stiff sides, and has a nice neck support.

The term "gigbag" is about a wide and elusive term as any.  A "gigbag" ranges from the $20 garbage some stores throw in as "case included" up to the stellar Mono and Reunion Blues cases that are time-tested monuments of durability and protection.  The latter are priced high, like their quality.

FWIW, I own two Mono cases (both electric cases, a single and a double), and have zero qualms about their ability to protect my guitars in most situations.  Likewise, I have seen many other very good cases from Gator to Taylor's "hard bags" and these are, IMHO, quality protection that exchanges a measure of a HSC's structural protection for lighter weight and convenience ...sometimes you just gotta have backpack straps!  A good gigbag or "hard bag" is an investment in protecting a valuable instrument and should be considered carefully considering what it will be carrying :)

The other big difference is that the hard bag has built-in neck support, and the gig bag doesn't. I'm a big fan of the hard bag, but don't gig or fly anywhere.

Thanks for your input.
I think I will by a Taylor Hard Bag as well for taking on a flight etc.
Yes, the Taylor Gig Bag I got before has no neck support.
It is light weight and good for carrying around though.

If you don't have a line on a used one, Sweetwater has them https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/200DlxHBag at a very decent price....
