ES Ground Fuse
« on: February 23, 2012, 02:58:00 PM »
Well, decided to take my 414ce Ltd into the shop ... ES was making a noise that seemed ground related (would stop when the metal housing on the cable was touched) ... tech confirmed and replaced ground fuse ... he suggested I keep a spare which sounded like a good idea ... what surprises me is there was no apparent reason for the fuse to blow ... I have yet to gig with this guitar and have only been playing it at home ..

Has anyone had any experience with these fuses being finicky and overly sensitive?

I have not had the problem on any of my ES equipped Taylors. BTW, how do you go about replacing the fuse? Unfortunatley,  I have all three versions of the ES system in my Taylors.

I have not actually done it myself but will next time it's needed ... according to what I understand, you take out the battery compartment and then remove 2 screws to take out the the housing which contains the fuse.  Perhaps others have actually done this and can explain it better.  Bottom line:  it is not hard to do (according to the tech).

Very simple...yes, remove the battery housing/jack unit and gently pull it out...you'll find the fuse there.  From what I remember I didn't have to unscrew anything the fuse just popped in and your done.  I've got a few for sale in the classifieds.

I have had to replace my fuse twice so far - and my 814ce is new! I bought it in November on Black Friday. I experienced the same thing and the only thing that I could attribute it to was very low RH causing static electricity. I had mine for about a month before I bought an acoustic amp (Loudbox Mini) and as soon as I plugged it in it was hissing and popping. I tried different cables and a different guitar and it only happened with the Taylor ES. I had the same exact experience: the hissing stopped when I grounded - touching anything metal in-line between the guitar and the amp. Except the strings. That was the signal that the fuse was blown. As soon as I changed the fues the problem stopped - until I took guitar and amp to visit my parents whose house also suffered from very low RH (About 29%).  I have since been very dilligent abbout keeping my play room (and house) at about 45-50% RH and it seems to be working. I find the Expression System very finicky (good choice of adverb, btw).

Thinking maybe the ES has been over thought? I'm not crazy about the piece of metal on the bridge plate.
