GS Mini Tuners Exact Replacement
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:52:29 PM »
I have searched (and searched, and searched) for the answer and either I'm the dumbest guy in history, a distinct possibility, or this has never been answered.

I would like to know which tuners (the whole thing, including pegs, not just buttons) can be installed on a Mini without having to drill holes, have an exposed hole or be the wrong size. Like others, I'm looking for some style and the better ratio. I've seen lots of posts that come close to the answer, but not specifically state that they are exact drop in replacements. I think the Taylor branded kind will work, but Taylor is out of stock on the golds.

Sorry if this has been answered and I missed it somehow.

There was a thread not too long ago that stated explicitly that the stock Taylor machines are a drop-in replacement for the GSm tuners, so no worries if you pick up those.  I can't speak to other brands, but can say the Gotoh 510s are a serious upgrade in feel and precision over the Taylor machines.  The Gotoh require nothing more except a small hole drilled for the set screw ...easy peasy :)

the 18:1 Taylor branded ping mini tuners that are used on 12 string models seem like
they would be a direct drop-in replacement, as most aftermarket tuners have set screws -
searching around (gotohs, grovers, schallers, waverlies), i haven't seen a "set-screwless" set
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Thanks. Guess there is no solution without the set screw, except for the Taylor branded. Seems weird there is no aftermarket tuner to specifically fit. It's like making a car and then no one sells tires for it without you having to alter the wheel. Thanks for the replies.

I have my Gotoh 510's laying on my desk waiting to replace the Taylor tuners on my 812.  And the tiny screw will cause no more than a pin-prick which will above all result in a terrific upgrade.

The Taylor branded mini Pings are the same 1:14 ratio and material as the GS Mini tuners. The only difference is button size and Taylor logo. The data on the Taylor store website was incorrect. I notified them about this recently and they have since updated the website.

The Hipshot open gear tuners I put on my mini required no new holes.  Very different look, but I like it and I have liked the tuners.
