Haven't had that happen myself.  First obvious thing to check is the battery; could be just as simple as a dead one.

Usually batteries fade and you hear the sound get bad quickly.   Check with another cable first, but possibly you have had a wire come off the endpin jack.

Anybody had the ES just die?
Suggestions for trouble shooting?

The troubleshooting suggestions in cases like these are usually the following, and I assume that you have already tried some of them:
1. obviously, test the battery voltage and if necessary replace the battery
2. check if the small LED on the ES board lights up or not when you insert a jack in the output endpin --> if the LED is on, try a different cable
3. check if a previous battery leaked some acid and damaged the battery holder electric contacts
4. check if there are any damages/interruptions on the wiring harness and connectors

If there's something worng, broken on the ES board, I am afraid it can't be easily fixed.
