Anybody See Phillip Phillips on A.I. Thursday March 6?
« on: March 08, 2014, 09:00:19 PM »
I know, lots of folks think it's a teen girl's show.  But I like Phillip Phillips, and what I noticed Thursday was this:  when he was auditioning in his winning year, Randy Jackson asked what kind of guitar he had, and Phillip said it was a Taylor GS7, and that he had worked two jobs for a year to pay for it.  He is still playing it, but he has beat the h*** out of it, and has a Willie Nelson hole started on the top, below the strings.  Still banging on it, though.

It's hard to see in this vid, the definition is not great like on my TV, but at 4:02 you can see (sorta) what I'm talking about.

i think matt matthews would be a more fitting stage name ;)
i had no idea he underwent 8 surgeries during that time (kidney stones & reconstruction) :o

from all the fast edits, it looks like the soundhole is no longer round & there's no need for that kind of wear, imho -
some rosette guards & a clear pickguard, or dual clear pickguards (one lefty & one righty) could have lessened the "carnage"

dave davids, er, matthews has managed to keep his 98(?) 714 in pretty good shape & he's been at it a good while longer

Hadn't noticed the damage the first time I watched his performance.

I saw that show and noticed the Willie Nelson hole developing too. I went to see John Mayer this summer and Phillip Phillips opened. He really beats on that thing! It took Willie many years to develop that hole while Phillip did it in a few short years. I suppose there are 2 ways of looking at it...it's either character or abuse!

My husband and I are faithful Idol and The Voice watchers. (We think the talent is much better on The Voice this year, btw....I'm just sayin'.)  Anyway, we noticed the guitar appeared beaten up too. We also thought Phillips did a lot of eye rolling and had some weirder than usual facial expressions when Seacrest was talking to him after his performance....just an observation.

I like the judging panel on AI much better this year.  Harry is hilarious.  J-Lo is much better than most of the females in recent past.  Keith Urban is I think the best judge they have had.

As far as Phillips goes.  I bet he was nervous.  Evan though he has been performing a lot, going back in front of the judges was still a bit unnerving.  He is getting the Dave Matthews thing down well.

I agree with your assessment of the judges! I hadn't thought of Phillips being nervous...good point.

I like almost all the AI singers this year--but I don't see any of them having a breakout career.  As for Phillips, he was nervous, esdoecially in the post-sing interview
