Music room set-up
« on: February 24, 2014, 07:41:53 PM »
Hello all,

I am seeking input into redesigning a 3rd bedroom into a music/exercise room.  I play mainly acoustic but would like to plug in occasionally and set up a loop pedal.  I also have a Zoom Q2HD recorder and use that to record things to send to my online instructors and friends.

It will have an exercise bike but that takes up little space.  I ride the bike while practicing the mandolin and I'll tell ya, for some it might be easy but for me it's like rubbing your head and patting your stomach but I'm getting better at both....ha

Anyway, I would like something where I could set up a chair/stool of some type (comfortable recommendations are welcome), music stand, and ipad holder.  In addition I would like to set up a computer and tv and would like some shelves for amps and music books and such.

And, would like to leave my instruments out so they are accessible for play, humidity is a manageable issue.

Crickets. ;D Keep things within easy reach and avoid clutter. Clutter sucks. Don't forget the pics when you're done. ;)

I have a couple Pick-N-Glider chairs in my room. I LOVE them. Great comfort, arm-less, and the gliding feature finds you slowly moving to the beat. That would be me #1 recommendation.

Thanks, I was mainly looking for some comfy chair recommendations.  I am very tall so stools and regular chairs are too short and the seats are too shallow.  I have been trying one of those foot rests and it's working out better.

We used a comfortable office chair that we already had... I just took the right arm off of it.  Height adjustable, rolls easy, swivels - it has worked out perfect as a "guitar chair."  My wife bought a comfortable leather chair, so she and he cat could enjoy the "concert seating."  A bookcase gives me a place to keep "stuff" right beside my chair.  Since the room is small, I added a double amp stand to get the amps off the floor (stacked).  Off The Wall guitar hangers keep my guitars within easy reach.  Living in a tropical climate, our whole house has tile floors - we bought an area rug for the guitar room to soften the sound a bit.

We're a long ways away from the house currently, so I can't post photos.  Sit in the room, decide what will fit best where... try that as a temporary situation, then start making holes and buying furniture!  I don't have a "man cave," but I am delighted with my guitar room.

Best wishes,
Jim

+1 on the Pick-n-Glider.  Very comfortable for playing and the gliding action is pleasant.  However, I am very tall at 6'-6" and find it to be a bit too low for my aging knees.  (My petite wife loves it as-is).  Without arms, it has been hard getting up again.  When the weather warms up and I can use my unheated shop again, I intend to build a small platform to raise it by about 4".  I've done the same thing to my sofa, using 4" PVC pipe segments under each corner to raise it up.  This getting older thing is not much fun.

Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

All good input thanks.  Taylor girl and earl that pick n glider looks very nice, I'll be looking into that for sure.

Capt Jim, I did what you said, took an old office chair and took the right arm off, works great!

We were also looking at putting a Murphy bed in the room for the occasional guest.

Just a word of advise.  My Grandpa use to say"Guest are like fish.  After three days they stink" don't get to nice of a bed in the guest room.

 I've got a 30" Taylor bar stool (I'm 6'4") that's comfortable if I feel like sitting.

Ha, too true.  If it was up to me we'd have no guest room.....my hubby has 4 worthless brothers and sisters.  Sounds harsh I know but believe me, they don't even know our address.....hubby's choice.
