Will do.

I had to chuckle when you mentioned the tattoos.  Years ago, my sister told me to say "Hi" to a guy she worked with who was going to be at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally... "You'll know him, because he has tattoos and always wears a black t-shirt."

Yes, she was serious. She was dumbfounded when I told her, "You just described about a half million of the people who will be there."  ;)

I saw a tattoo or twelve during the Taylor tour.  Doesn't concern me, as I have some 35+ year old ink.  Sure doesn't look as good as it did when it was fresh and my skin was more toned.   ;D

Thanks.  :)

Yeah, I was kinda chuckling when I wrote it, too.  It would describe probably 1/2 of Portland.....maybe more!

OK, TaylorGirl, this one's for you...

http://captnjim.blogspot.com/2013/02/plucking-and-jiving.html

Another musical instrument factory tour today, WAY different from the Taylor tour...

Best wishes,
Jim

And for GtrgRrl: I did ask about Dan (and gave the description)... the lady giving the tour said, "Oh, you must mean Danny - he is so sweet!"  Didn't see him, though.  The actual tour was pretty short.

Great story and nice pics (Deering Tour). Especially liked the "jumping in your boots" part. LOL

Nice blog....even enjoyed the joke. I play 5-string banjo, but not nearly as good as guitar. I understand that you either love it or hate it. But I appreciate the banjo and the talent it takes to play Scruggs style. I learned from a dear friend that I went to school with, who was awesome. Deerings are really nice banjos....never dreamed they made that many. The Good Times are their basic, entry banjo. I wish I had done their tour (I probably would have had a little more appreciation for it than you did), but I give you and your wife a lot respect for taking the time to go. While you were there, which Deering did you buy for me? Did you know that Greg Deering and Bob Taylor are close friends and Bob built banjos? I think he claims to be a better banjo player than guitar player. But, maybe we are all lucky he stuck with building guitars. Thanks for the wonderful write up!

For full disclosure, I enjoy banjo music... as well as banjo jokes.  A former boss at one of my boat jobs played banjo.  I was "entertaining the troops" (marina party) and convinced him to bring his banjo for a song (A Pirate Looks At 40... 4 chords) for a duet.  Which reminds me: how long does it take to tune a banjo? (Pause) Nobody knows! (rimshot)

http://captnjim.blogspot.com/2011/08/marina-party.html

The lady doing the tour spoke about the American Dream group, including Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug, Greg and Janet Deering, James Goodall, Larry and Kim Breedlove, and Geoff Stelling... quite a few big names in the musical instrument manufacturing world these days.

The tour at Deering was the first time I ever handled a banjo - I was surprised at how heavy some of them are!  I may have some hidden talent for the banjo, though... having never played one before, I was able to play a perfect G chord on my first strum.  ;)

Best wishes,
Jim

We are doing some traveling by land these days.  I had suggested working San Diego into the itinerary and mentioned the tour at the Taylor factory - my lovely wife was onboard with that.  We have been enjoying the nice weather and beautiful waterfront in the area... today, the weather is turning, so it's a good day for some "indoor activity."  We're off to the do the factory tour this afternoon.  I'm looking forward to seeing the "birthplace" of some of my favorite guitars.   :)

Best wishes,
Captain Jim
I would love to go but my spouse won't go with me :'(

I was very impressed.  Here's a write up from our travel blog...

http://captnjim.blogspot.com/2013/02/going-home.html

(Lots of photos)

And a preview...

My take on it: just the right blend of machines for the repeatability and consistency, and hand work for the beauty and heart!

Best wishes,
Jim

PS  I got to play the new GO models and an 812ce 12 fret.   :)
Thanks for the info and all the great photos. Glad you had fun ! I hope to get there someday.

I love the banjo even though I don't play. My first grade teacher played the banjo and sang with us.
