Thinking about a BTO ....
« on: December 02, 2012, 10:43:38 AM »
Hi Folks,

Planning my birthday present to myself for November 2016 - my 60th birthday. Can't decide...
Thinking about maybe a 12-fret, but do Taylor only make 12-fret guitars as a Grand Concert shape? Would they build a 12-fret guitar as a Grand Auditorium shape? Curious to know.
Can't decide on back and body woods. My 412CE Fall 2011 Ltd and 814CE Custom (with Adi CV bracing) are both Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce combos and I like that, so thinking nothing 'outlandish' for a 12-fret unless someone can convince me otherwise?
Also, no cutaway and no ES.
But, I will be going for a full-on 'bling' look to include the colourful paua edging, and an elaborate Nouveau vine fretboard inlay complemented by elegant headstock torch and bridge inlays just like Taylor do for their Presentation Series guitars. Nice!
I can but dream, so let's hope I live that long.
Cheers.
Bill, from Shrewsbury, UK

the 12 fret is available as a BTO GA also & adi is an option for bracing material -
there was fall 10 814ce LTD 12 fret
http://www.elderly.com/new_instruments/items/814CELTD10F.htm
i'm pretty sure that it had a 12 fret bracing pattern (listed as CV -  perhaps CV profile)

spring 11 cedar/macassar

the fall 11 koa LTD had a 12 fret GA non-cutaway option (seen 'em with a cutaway also)
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/limited-editions/fall-2011

imbuia could  add a little something on a 12 fret GA -
there hasn't been a CV braced imbuia LTD model yet, but there was a spring 11 714ceLTD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doAHRjqGPvw

there is also a new body style forthcoming ('OM'), either between a GC & GA or GA & GS -
if you're able to try out a 12 fret & still prefer the 14 fret neck, it could be worth considering

sitka/rosewood is a nice combo, especially on a DN (imho) -
i've played a pretty sweet fall 11 412ce LTD ... i'll bet yours is very nice 8)

Hi Michael. Many thanks for all that info, plus the links. Most helpful. A lot will change between now and when I place the order. Just dreamin' at the moment. Bill

Just checked the 2012 Price List on the Taylor website and can confirm that they do indeed offer both GC and GA as a 12-fret. Nice!

there has been mention of a new body shape -
W & S V71
bobspeak page 5, bottom of second column

article about andy powers
something about palo escrito & european maple (used on BR Vs)

in the factory tour pics dmccrider shared, gloss 200 series koa LTDs & what looks to be a sunburst 110 are being built in el cajon -
looking closer at the pic of the rack of completed guitars with that one, there looks to be 114e & 110e models also & likely 114s too

there are 210ce koa LTDs also -
i wonder if there will be 210e, 214e, 214e-N & 214ce-Ns too :-\

that'd be an awful lot of different models (12) imho, if there are 114, 110ce &
114ce sunbursts as well, but perhaps there might  be a 214ce-N koa LTD

i'm thinking what's left of this year, & next year, will be pretty interesting ...
winter namm is just over 7 weeks away :)
