Taylor '93 420 Rosewood
« on: October 31, 2020, 09:07:48 PM »
Hello,

Was wondering if anyone knows what type of neck joint in my '93 420 R. ?
It's a set neck, not a bolt on.
Also  these are finished in Poly , correct?

Thanks  :)

Taylors were always and continue to be made with bolt on neck joints.  I know that poly finish was being used on '95 Taylors,  but I'm not sure when they began to use it. You may want to check with Taylor customer service.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Hello again !!

Well, a year later I called Taylor about my '93  420R.
Yes, it is a bolt on. Single bolt in the heel and the fretboard
part is glued onto the top.
Also, it has a Nitro finish.  They didnt go to poly until 2000, he said.

Guess it depends on whom you talk with...when my old '95 Taylor went in for a refresh package, Taylor confirmed that it had a poly finish, and they did some finish repairs using the poly finish method - same with my '97 Taylor when it went back to El Cajon for some finish repairs....

Good questions

All Taylors have bolt necks.  In 2000 they went to the NT, with a non glued bridge extension.

But the earlier ones are bolt on too. A bit more work to reset, but still much less than a completely glued in neck!

According to my pal Tim Luranc, Taylor's employee #1, and the head Luthier for R. Taylor, the switch from nitro to UV poly was in 95. So 94 was the last year for nitro.

Enjoy that golden oldie!

I wonder if the switch from nitro to poly was an overnight change, with all models being switched over, or was it a phased-in approach?  I imagine that it could have been phased in over any length of time, maybe as long as a year to fully switch all models over to a new process.

Nitro was phased out.
Mgap is Correct. I believe a few of the 2000 high end models still had the old nitro finish
I seem to recall an All Koa Jumbo I had from 2000 with the old neck and join too.

Cheers
