NGD- Taylor 114ce- Pics and Mini-review
« on: March 09, 2021, 12:44:15 PM »
Recently had a NGD from a trade I did on FB. Traded my Martin D-10e for this bad boy. Really happy with this guitar!

I have owned a whole bunch of guitars over the years- almost all of them were dreds. But I have to say, there is something really great about a Taylor GA. The tone just seems more focused than a dread- the best way I can think to describe it is very articulate. Each note, no matter where I play on the neck seems to just jump out at you because it is so crystal clear. I thought there would be a trade-off in volume, but if there is, it is very minor.

So all in all, I'm really enjoying this new acquisition very much. Anyone else out there love the X14s?

Congrats, man!  That certainly looks like a fine specimen, but frankly, I've never met a 100/200 Taylor that didn't play superbly or sound excellent.  Lots of bang-for buck in this series, and flies under the radar for many, especially those who feel these are "overpriced" when compared to the specs of other guits in this price range.  Whatever; their prerogative :)

Funny you mention the notes' articulation and clarity from the 100's GA vs Dred: spot on as it's a different voice that offers a different focus.  You prefer the tonal "focus" of the GA over that of a dred in the same way I value Taylor's dreds over Martin's and that ilk of dreds: the Taylor offers a voice that is biased toward balance across the strings and tonal spectrum while the Martin et.al. are noted for their bass content and "rumble" in the low end, which explains why these folks find Taylor DNs so unsatisfying.  Different strokes for folks, to be sure.  Sorry for the digression and mental meandering ...it's a slow morning ;)

Enjoy the guitar ...I've always loved this series and own a 210 myself.  These are excellent, no-excuses instruments!  Congrats on a fine looking one! :)

Congrats on the new guitar! I'm falling in love with the x14 size, as well; see my recent NDG post for my 414ce LTD. I haven't played the 114 or 214 myself, but you're obviously going to love it.

Congrats on that nice 114! The GA is my favorite guitar shape of all time! You'll have lots of fun with it, while it gives you the freedom to build on your musical skills. Enjoy!

I agree with you, the GA's are pretty special. Love the back on that "bad boy". Congratulations!

Congrats, Beachbum.  It sure is purdy, and I know it sounds good!  GA has been my favorite shape.  A 114ce is my Acoustic Alaska Guitar Camp instrument, and good enough to play exclusively for 55-60 hours of lessons and jamming during those camp weeks.  It lives up there to avoid the risks of airline travel.

As of an hour ago a buddy paid me for the GS-K (K-16) he has been lusting over.  I am now down to only the 114ce in Anchorage and the 424-LTD (all-koa) here in Idaho.  The thinning of the herd is proceeding nicely.....
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Thanks to all for the kind and encouraging replies!

And Edward, I really agree with what you are saying. Depending on my mood or what song I'm playing, I like either the Martin "rumble" and the Taylor "sparkle". Although I have to say, the X14 sounds so great to me that I may be swinging over to the Taylor side of things more than ever.

Thanks again!

Congrats! The  114ce was my first Taylor (and what I consider my first ‘real’ guitar). It blew me away the first time I ran a pick across it’s strings and it still pleases my ears every time I pick it up.
