String Change
« on: November 15, 2016, 09:30:47 PM »
I have a new 712-12 Fret with stock HD Lights.  When I auditioned the guitar before ordering mine, I heard more balance and bass.  When I received mine, it sounded less dynamic and with less bass.

I am thinking about trying the Elixir light-mediums (12-56). The string tension is 176 vs. 174 with the HD lights.  Has anyone tried these?  If so, what was your expirience with the tone?  I'm looking for a balanced tone with more bass.

Maybe your new guitar just needs more playing time to "open up". Note: This is a very controversial subject on this forum, so expect many differing opinions. You might try calling the Taylor help line and hear what they have to say.

Hi Keith,

Yessir, you hit the nail on the head: choosing a string gauge alters the tonal balance.

FWIW, on every GA I've owned in the past (and one non-Taylor), I have preferred the med-light set.  And on one GC I own now, I likewise prefer the med-lights.  And all were PB nanos.  Happy experimenting :)
