Greetings from Sparks, NV
« on: January 15, 2012, 07:25:42 PM »
Hello everyone,
Learned how to play on an old acoustic whose g string felt like a wire coat hangar in high school (1970).  I never got serious about it but I've always had one around - can't remember all of them, but I gave a small Yamaha to my step son and have some how still managed to hang on to my old beater Hohner which I got back in either the late 70's or early 80's - which still sounds great with a good set of new strings!
I've played only as a hobbyist and pretty much haven't even picked up a guitar for the past 12 years when about a year ago I decided I wanted to get into it seriously (mid life crisis, perhaps?).  Since them I have sort of been on a buying spree and i don't think I'm done yet (wife begs to differ).
I have to say that I really love my 414 as it is one of the sweetest sounding guitars I've ever played, as well as fairly easy to play due to the great setup and low action from the factory.
I lived in San Diego from 74-94 while in the navy and married a San Diego gal (still with her, too).  Since I have in-laws there I have an excuse to go to the Taylor factory some day soon.  It gets me that I lived in Santee (right next door to El Cajon) from 84 - 94 and hadn't even heard of Taylor guitars.  But I wasn't really into it then.
Looking forward to meeting all of you in the forums!

Welcome, thank you for your service to our country, and congrats on your long marriage.  Enjoy your playing.  The more you play, the more guitars you'll end up buying.  My wife doesn't understand the passion but then I don't understand why all the shoes and purses either.  I just recently became a strat owner.  What kind ya got?

Hi boxcar and thanks for the interesting bio! :D So in all the time you lived near the Taylor factory, you didn't go there. Now you get to make up for it! :P A few of our members went there recently when they put out a lot of guitars for sale. I don't remember what the event was called, but they were able to get some beautiful guitars! The posts are on the forum somewhere...does anyone remember what that special day was called? ??? Nice to meet you. :)

Hi Chad,

Yeah, mine does the purses thing, too.  As far as my Strat, it's a Fender Standard Strat HSS (made in Mexico).  It's what started me getting back into playing.  I told my wife that I had never had an electric and wanted to try one.

No logical reason for choosing a Strat; I just thought if Hendrix could play one upside down and do all the things he could do with it, it would be a good choice.  Besides, I've always liked the look.  I found that picking out an electric (for me anyway) was more a matter of looks.  I figure with the little Mustang amp I bought with it I could make it sound anyway I wanted to.  Not like going down to the local GC and listening to the tonal differences between all the various makes and models of acoustics and trying to find the one that speaks to me.

Gotta be honest tho; I've never been good with a pick (they either spin out of position or I drop them) even with my acoustic so that kind of limits my electric playing.  Good thing Mark Knopfler finger picks some good stuff on his guitar (which I believe is a Strat!).  I prefer to finger pick which really suits my Taylor well.

Hi Cindy,
I know that I have driven by the Taylor factory many times, but I have absolutely no recollection of ever noticing it!  I'm sure if I was hypnotized they would find memories of it in my subconscious somewhere.

Anyway, I plan on keeping my eye out for any special factory events and surprise the wife by taking her to visit her mom and brothers (she'll think I'm some kind of wonderful guy).  I could bear it long enough if I come back with a good deal!

Hi boxcar,

Glad you joined up here.  I enjoyed reading your bio and do appreciate your service to our Country.  It looks as if you have a nice group of guitars.  I look froward to hearing more from you.
