Taylor k4 vids...where are they?
« on: July 14, 2014, 11:27:05 PM »
So I got my new 214ce-k dlx about a week ago and I've been thinking of pairing it with a great di/eq/pre amp.  So far I'm between the fish man pro platinum and the taylor k4.  Obviously there's a huge price difference between the two.

I already know I like the fish man cause I used to own one.  My problem with it is the lack of a balanced input to carry on the taylors balanced output via trs cable.  So naturally I'm thinking the k4 is the way to go if I'm gonna do this right.

Here's my other problem.  No place near me has k4s that I can try out and I can't find any good videos of it being demo'd.  Google, youtube, and taylors website have failed me.  Anyone know where I can find good quality videos of the k4 in action?

And I might as well ask while I'm at it...is the k4 worth the price difference compared to the fish man which only runs like $180 or so?

I trust your 214 has the full ES and not the ES-T, right?  With the ES, you don't have to go balanced, and there is no sonic improvement by doing so.  You get a hotter output signal, better s/n ratio, and potential for longer-cable runs w/o signal degredation, or can go straight into the snake/console.  All that said, unless the aforementioned helps your setup, going balanced doesn't really get you "more" than just using a good guitar cable into a proper DI.

I personally think the K4 is overpriced ...not a poor unit by any stretch, just overpriced, IMHO.
No experience with the Fishman but folks do like that unit.

you may also want to check out:
- Radial
- DTar
- Presonus (no preamp, just a 3-band para-EQ, but is dead-quiet and has balanced and unbalanced ins/outs)
- LR Baggs Venue

All these are strong units that are quiet, shape tone well, and enjoy good reputation for solid stage use.  If you cant try them, try Sweetwater, MF, or the like who has a trial period.  I'm guessing after you've picked the one that fits your liking/budget, any of the above will serve you perfectly well.

Thanks for the reply.  After some more research and thinking about things I'm gonna go with the fishman pro platinum again.  Your reply gave me push I needed!  I just really wasn't sure if there really was a sonic benefit from the k4 and a balanced signal but I think I get it now
