New Taylor - heel & body gap
« on: June 04, 2013, 04:41:24 PM »
So, I bought a used 2011 Taylor 214ce for a super price. Everything looks great on it, not a single scratch or scuff, straight as an arrow, in really fine shape. My only concern is that there is a gap between the heel and body. From what I've read, it's pretty common, but I want to be sure. I've posted photos.

Best,
-casey

I have heard that Taylor uses a special putty to fill the gap when it is present.  I own a 2007 GA7 that I bought in 2009.  When I had it checked out by a Taylor tech, the neck needed to be removed and the shims changed. When he replaced the neck, I had a similar gap.  When I mentioned it, he said it was common, and found the putty to fix it.

I've noticed such a gap on my 2007 NT neck GC3 but nothing of the sort on any of my PRE-NT necked Taylors.  Don't know why and I cannot imagine the 2007 had a neck reset prior to me purchasing it.

Maybe someone here can shed some light on the subject.  Maybe it's a little "wiggle room" built in for neck resets, not necessarily something that shows up only after a neck reset?

Hi Casey,

You heard right: normal gap that allows the tech to shim the neck appropriately for the proper neck/body geometry.  No one ever notices said gap because it is filled (if a gap makes itself present) when the neck is removed/replaced for any reason.  That your guitar plays and sounds great means at least it was done properly; yet the tech should have noticed this and filled it accordingly.  A simple task for any "Authorized" factory tech ...call up Taylor and they'll find you one closest to your zipcode.
