Nut Height
« on: April 06, 2013, 12:08:34 PM »
I recently bought an ivory nut & saddle to go on my new GS Mini Hog. I took it to a local luthier to have them installed but I'm not too happy with the nut height. In the past I've always done my own set ups and "tweaking" on my guitars but the cost of a Bob Colosi nut & saddle wasn't quite the same as a piece of $5 bone for me to play around with. Now I believe I will stick to doing it myself.

Pressing the string down between the second & third fret, it looks like you could drive a Mack truck between the string and the first fret (a little exaggeration maybe). My question is should I file down the individual slots or remove the entire nut and take some off the bottom?

Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I'd recommend cutting each slot. After they're where you want them ,remove the nut and remove the excess material from the top.
each slot should be only half, or a smidge more than the string diameter.I'd also call the tech, and see how much glue he used. Exercise extreme caution when removing the nut.

Thanks Steve......Do you think I could remove the excess off the top without removing the nut? Perhaps I could tape off & protect the surrounding area? If that's not a good idea then I will remove it, the D,B,G & e string slots look too deep to begin with anyway. I'm positive I won't be going back to that tech. He was the most recommended by people where I live but the "pickens' are slim" to begin with.
