Here's "how to" make your own guitar humidifier!
« on: February 08, 2013, 04:53:58 PM »
Most if not all of us have guitar humidifiers for the body of the guitar that somehow fit into the sound hole.  What do we do about the headstock of the guitar?  That too needs to be properly humidified as well...right?

I wanted a very small, but capable humidifier for the headstock compartment as well.

Here's how I made mine.  The cost is easily under $4 dollars.  You'll need to buy a Travel Q-tips package, and a package of just ordinary sponges.

Next take one of the sponges and cut it in half (cut it in half shortways) Then this is the hard part...take one of the halves and then cut it in half again...but neither long or short ways...cut it in half as if you were trying to make the sponge thinner.  This allows it to easily fit into the Q tips travel case with out having to be forced into the case...you'll want enough room for the half sponge to move around freely...to allow airflow and humidity to escape the case.

Next take your Q Tips travel case and drill three or so holes in it like so.

Below is the finished product!  The little Q tips case easily fits into the headstock area of your guitar case!
PS...if your sponge ever starts to smell funky, take it out...rinse it thoroughly with dish soap...wash it completely out, and then MICROWAVE it for about 2 minutes thereabouts.  The microwave will literally make sure that no germs/mold etc will survive.  Put back into your travel case and enjoy!

Hope this helps!  Remember, it's important that your WHOLE guitar remains properly humidified!   ;D

Great idea jjrpilot.  Just this week I have given into the idea that humidifying the whole room is to much work.  I put 4-5 gallons of water into my room daily, which means for me filling 3 tanks every morning,  cleaning the filters in vinegar weekly.  Buying new filters every couple of months. :'(

I decided to buy a Oasis, a planet waves, and a Kyser lifeguard in the sound hole humidifier.  They seem to be working great.  I have always had one Oasis humidifier and that one will last about a week before I have to refill it, I bought a new Oasis and it says that it will put out about 20% more water vapor than the original, but it lasts maybe 3 days before needing refilling, same with the planet waves.  The Kyser seems to be lasting longer, not sure how long it will go yet.

I also put hygrometers in the guitar case by the head stock and found that the Rh is maintaining itself at 45rh.  So if the Rh holds steady like this I am going to be set. ;)  The maintenance is minimal, which means more play time. ;D  So I wonder if the reverse method would work?  If I used the tip from jjrpilot and humidified the whole case will the body get the necessary humidity required?  Uhmmm.. I will have to try this one out, but how could I test the Rh inside the guitar body?
