Replacement Grover Tuners
« on: December 14, 2012, 07:38:28 PM »
Im am contemplating putting new tuners on my DCSM. It has Grover tuners and they are well worn and a bit tired. From what I see on Taylors web site Taylor tuners will not 'drop in'.

Does anyone know what model/size/gear ratio was standard on Taylors with Grovers?

If any one has input on another brand I am not stuck on Grovers.

Thanks in advance!

Tired and worn?
Are they adjusted right?
Tightened?
Both with a Phillips Screw-driver and 10mm Wrench?

If you loosen the phillips screw, does each tuner turn freely and easily?
When you tighten everything, do not over tighten.

If you really need to replace them, I would go with the same Grovers.

Of course, I have been out of guitars for 30 years and I am just getting settled back in, so perhaps I am totally wrong on this subject..

the Grovers used on early DCSMs were likely 102GK (14:1) & 102-18G (18:1) on the later models

Gotoh makes a tuner that is a 'drop-in' replacement SVG510Z (21:1, center set screw, GG - bright gold)

i've had no issues with the 18:1 Grovers, but the Gotohs are smoooth :)

Thanks for the info. The guitar is a 1995, the tuners Gold plating has worn off and it does not hold its tune as long as my other Taylors. I would like to replace them for looks as much for performance.
