Case for a 450 12-string
« on: June 23, 2012, 08:30:26 AM »
Howdy.
I own a 450 12-string currently ensconced in a cheap HSC.  Do the current Taylor hard-sided bags provide enough support to the neck of a 12-string or should I stick with the HSC?
Taylor changed the shape of their dreadnoughts so my 1996 450 will not fit in one of the current Taylor HSC. (I'd prefer to get a Taylor case/bag as my other Taylors are in their original, Taylor made homes.)
Thanks!

hi CL,
the cushioning & the neck support of the hardshell bag is pretty substantial, imho

i have a 650, which is the same shape as the 450 (square shoulder 12 string) -
i'll check & see if i can find any relatively recent versions of cases that will
fit well & i'll check the guitar in the hardshell bag too ... will update soon

hi CL,
test-fitted some cases (haven't been able to try a 2012 DN case) other than
the 91-96 deluxe case, the only Taylor-branded case i've found to fit thus far is
the 07-08 210 case, which is a black flat top, 4 chrome latches, wrapped handle

the other down below don't seem to fit (reasons are listed)
09 210 case - black flat top, 5 chrome latches, unwrapped handle (headstock pocket too short)

hardbag - headstock pocket too short

the upper bout is too snug on these
97-00 SKB thermoplastic
07-11 300/400 series
97-11 500/up
07-11 GS deluxe case

hope this helps a little

This:
http://www.gatorcases.com/p/16117-1116/gl-dread

It is a "hard bag" in that it is nylon shell with zippers and backpack straps, yet rigid shell which offers the strength of a hsc.  Light, strong, far superior protection over a gigbag, and a great alternative to a true hsc.  I've used mine for years now and has served my Taylor dred perfectly.  BTW, they even make a 12-string version that should fit yours well (but obviously check the listed dimensions).

Thanks michaelw. I think I'll stick with the HSC for now. While its not a Taylor branded case, it works.
