Any cedar/koa fans out there?
« on: June 13, 2012, 12:41:04 PM »
Some years ago, I think Taylor brought out a limited 714 with this combination? Did anyone get to try it, or have you played any other make that has combined cedar with koa? If so, what were your impressions?

I once had a cedar top with a koa rosette (2006 714ce) does that count? Joking aside, I've never seen this combo of tone woods but would love to play one of these guitars sometime, especially if it had adirondack CV bracing. I'm sure it would be a very pretty guitar too. I'll look forward to hearing from someone who has first hand experience.

Here's a link to that special edition 714. It's always difficult to really know how a guitar sounds from these clips, but to me it's the acoustic sound that shines here.

I'm looking at the Taylor factory web site, at the K16ce and GA-K, and a Cedar top is an option (Sitka Spruce is standard).

I have a limited production GA-KC from Taylor's first relesse of the GA body style.  The Guitar is so sweet. The sustain is wonderful and while individual notes are distinct, the framing of chords and multiple notes is just outstanding. I would not promote the guitar for heavy strumming but it is a fingerpicking delight.

This perhaps more so than any of my guitars is a guitar you can fall in love with over and over.  Its so neat to retun to this guitar after a time and just "visit" with it.  I can get lost for hours at a time with this guy.

A great wood combination.

As a fingerstyle player, I think I would love your guitar - it sounds quite magical!

To this day, one of the best sounding Taylors I ever had was a 1998 Koa / Cedar.Oh !
It had the most amazing koa , Very rare quilted Koa in the most beautiful honey color . I have some pics over on the AGF that come up at ramdom on occations .
It was so alive , a beautiful finger picker.
I let it go to the Indianapolis Guitar Center and I seen it 2 times after that , the poor thing went down hill with other people abusing all guitar laws.
I swear I had a Kenny Loggins Signature also  that was just 1 slice/ cut away , It was cut from the same log and slab. Dumb me on selling both ! Darn G.A.S.

Koa and cedar are  a wonderful combo.

I've got the 714ce 2008 Fall Ltd which is koa/cedar and love it.  It's a great finger style player and does really well at strumming too as long as I don't get too crazy hard.
