Title: 614 Glamor Shots
Post by: Strumming Fool on February 21, 2019, 02:25:56 PM
So she just came back from the shop with a new Colosi vintage bone saddle and an LR Baggs Lyric installed. Besides the beautiful maple figure on this guitar, I can't get over the quality of the spruce top. Its grain with its cross-silking is reminiscent of spruce tops I had seen decades ago when the available supply of quality spruce was much higher. If you haven't had a chance to get a close look at the newly (2015) designed aesthetics, you might be blown away by their use of the grained ivoroid on the top border, headstock border and the rosette. The work is exquisite! Anyway, take a look!

Gorgeous from top to bottom, front to back! I see what you're saying about the spruce top, call it "old growth spruce".  8) Sometimes I just sit and stare at the silking, it's mesmerizing.

Yes the soundboard is very nice.  That peg head is absolutely gorgeous, matching back strap and sound hole detail is awesome.  The ivoroid trim is so nicely done, it makes it look very classy.   I love it.  You have yourself another winner SF.

Thanks everyone for your kind words. This guitar plays and sounds amazing. I'm a real fan of the redesigned 614 and its V bracing!

Indeed, a real beauty you have there, SF!  I have the "artist" inlays on my 08 as well ...unique, somewhat rare, and attractive design.  Enjoy in good heath, man!  :D

I thought they looked familiar - Taylor apparently calls the inlays "wings" these days....

Very nice!  I'm trying to find a X-braced 614 myself, non cutaway and they're scarce!

I often marvel at Taylor’s production line capabilities. You point out the purfling around the headstock. On my K24ce, this is done in maple and extends continuously down both sides of the fretboard! Amazing! This type of detailing would only be done in custom shops at other makers. BT often comments about his history of engineering unique production machinery and the joy he receives from these accomplishments. The mindset that they will be the innovators of the industry keeps paying off.

I know what you mean.  My 916ce has Koa purfling around the headstock and down the neck like your K24ce.

I don't know if it's wise I've joined this forum - right now I'm doing all I can to stop thinking I should go to the nearby Guitar Center today.   :o Beautiful guitar!!

Yes, the K24s and the 914s do have some wonderful purfling work using woods for accents. While the Ivoroid on the 614 can't really compare to the wood inlays, Taylor actually positioned its grain not in the flow of the purfling but perpendicular to it (at a 90 degree angle) resulting in a semi-herringbone look - double line on the top, single line on the back and around the headstock - it's sort of mind-blowing in its tiny detail!
