Title: Question about Taylor 12 strings
Post by: Andromeda on January 19, 2012, 07:05:23 PM
From their new web site it looks like the GS5 12 string comes with a cedar top. The cite says that the GS8 12 string can be made with a cedar top also. I thought Taylor didn't make 12 strings with a cedar top?

They didn't used to. (I saw a prototype about four years ago--perhaps they passed the test!)

I think I did see a GS5 12 string with a cedar top listed on a site once but that was either a custom order or  a prototype. If Taylor is doing a cedar topped 12 string I will have to save my pennies for one1

from looking at the website i find it very difficult to tell, as some
of the information seems to need to be sorted & reorganized

on the main GS5-12 page, below the guitar, it shows the specs for the AE 500 series
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/gs5-12#specifications (http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/gs5-12#specifications)
the specifications list further down the page shows that it does have a cedar top

the top on the picture of the guitar looks  very dark, if it's engelmann & although
the GS5 has a cedar top, there is a significant difference in the amount of tension
(around 180 vs 240 for the 12-string set) & i would think the bracing that is specific
to the 12 string models would have to be adequate to structurally support the top,
not to mention that a cedar tops for a 12'er would also need to be exceptionally stiff

i guess Taylor could have 'gone & done it' ;D
