Title: New Taylor Guitars Website up and running
Post by: greg947 on January 18, 2012, 05:59:40 PM
Hey everyone,
It looks like the new Taylor Website is online.  I just checked it.  Latest Wood and Steel publication also available.
I don't have any more details because I just found it.  I'm going back to check out some more of it now.

Thanks for the update.

Not gonna lie, the old website wins in terms of aesthetics. The new website feels like something Fender would do.

That said, I imagine the new website works a bit better across all platforms (tablet, mobile, etc). I just wish it felt more simple and refined like the Taylor brand has been up until this point.

I think the new website needs to have a few kinks worked out.  It is not as easy to navigate around as the old site.  It is like some links aren't working correctly.  Hopefully, it will improve.

Not crazy about it. Past issues of W&S limited. So much for research. >:(

Hey folks - this is just the launch version.

It's built on a new platform that we can modify, add, delete, etc.

We will be adding all of the old research content over the next weeks/months. Just like our guitars, the new site will be refined and maximized to deliver the best experience and information possible.

Thanks,
B

This is good to hear, and thanks for the update.
One thing I liked about the prior format was the consistent layout on all pages (product pages) with the easy way to zip from looking at 5xx GA's to GC's etc.  And the nice navi bar across the top.
I haven't spent much time at the new formatted site, but to me, it seems too 'busy'.

Thanks again for the info/interest!

Sorry, the new TaylorWare store is a month away. We were told the old store would stay working - I'll check into it. In the meantime, you can always call the 800 number and order from a real person!

The new nav is not working the way it was tested. Once on a product page it should stick to the top of any window, and the roll over/hover function does not seem to be consistent.

We've been working on it for a year, and testing for the last month, but once we moved it onto the Amazon servers we're finding additional bugs. Thanks for your patience.

yay :D

the headers & pages are nice - it seems more like viewing a page out of W & S,
rather than just looking a site on a screen (it has a 'warm & familiar' feel to it)

i like the magnify feature on the various pics, especially the PS Series, the pics are
ultra-sharp & the lighting appears very natural (even parts of the serial # are legible)

this is a particularly cool area (well, i like it anyways)
http://www.taylorguitars.com/support/owner-resources (http://www.taylorguitars.com/support/owner-resources)
there aren't just drop-down menus, hi-lite & click -
it is integrated, with many relevant areas that are all 'right there',
like an interactive page out of W & S & the navigation extends into
more pages, feeling very much like flipping pages in a magazine (imho)

i can see how this format & the course of navigation
would be extremely compatible with a touchscreen tablet

there were a couple of little 'nit-picky' things i noticed & it may be just me

it may be due to my computer screen size, aspect ratio or the resolution that it's
set at, but the vertical parts of certain characters appears as if they were in bold font -
for instance, the text line 'electric guitar will help' looks like electric guitar will help

when scrolling down to view the options in a series it seems like,
at first glance, that there are as many options as the series number -
for example in the 900 series, it reads  'view all 900 options'

900 options :o
perhaps, 'view 900 series options' or view 'all 900 series options' ???

overall, a very well done updated site, imho ...
the 200s will have a rosewood inner veneer this year - cool 8)

I like it, however it appears that the specs for the ga,gc,and gs. are flip flopped around a bit im sure the gs should be the largest of the three yet as it stands it is the smallest; http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/shapes

i think i have it even more switched around but if you look at the deminsions it seems off. new site though- surely will be fixed or maybe im just wrong (wouldn't be the first time :) :) )

sometimes it takes time to warm up to new things but right off the bat i like the new pictures and some of the information. I'm sure others will like it more and more the more time we have to navigate it- great job taylor!

Just spent some time on the new site and I really like it. Sure, it still needs some tweaking here and there, but overall it's a vast improvement over the old site, IMO.

I've got to say that after a quick look, I think it's a great start!  Everything seems a little large, so it seems to be better suited to a larger screen.  I had to zoom it out a bit when viewing.

I really like how all different specs on the guitars are intertwined.  No matter what spec is listed, ALL the corresponding models that include that spec are listed, then from any of the listed guitars, any new spec can be selected to redefine the list.  It would be cool if you could select more than one spec to be used to build the list of results (for instance if I wanted to see all rosewood bodied, GS guits, etc).  The lists are sortable, but I wish it could have a selectable format (like small icons).  The large images don't allow for much to be viewed on the screen at once.  I also like how the shape and wood info is now integrated into the guitar section and not in the separate resource section.

Overall, I find it VERY easy to quickly view and compare the various models, specs, etc.  I think it would have make sifting though all the various series and models much easier a few months ago when I purchased my guitar.

Thanks for the updates Brian! Like anything new, it's going to take some getting used to. I have a feeling I'm going to much prefer the new site on the iPad and iPhone, which I can tell was a point of emphasis in the new layout and design. And you're absolutely right about refining -- I went back and looked through some of my old Taylor insider emails -- I found that the style had changed over the years more often than I thought.

Thanks again!

I just tried to log on and got a pop up that says it's access restricted and they want me to sign up with a password - no way, somethings wrong.

Okay I went and found an old bookmark for the Taylor site instead of from the google listing and got in. I like it, I like the new website a lot.

Not to be negative but I have to agree. Aesthetically Taylor really has gone backwards on the site design. It is also seems much harder to find things based upon my first few visits. I am sure that the content will catch up and that technical issues such as broken links will get squared away soon. Nevertheless, the site is just not as attractive or as easy to navigate as the old one.

It appears from the site re-design that Taylor is repositioning its line, reducing the distinction between straight acoustics and acoustic/electrics, or eliminating straight acoustics altogether which would really surprise me. I gave up trying to find pages for acoustic GCs, GAs an GSs. Have they been discontinued?

Cursoring through endless page links at the bottom of the site's various category listings is incredibly tedious. The search feature was no more helpful.  Trying to find my way around the site to find things that I know should be there is exactly like wading around in the Fender site and Taylor's new site design is significantly less attractive than Fender's.

I hope that they will get all of this straightened out. The old site was clean, logical and well organized except for the way the electrics were incorporated. The new site looks haphazard and is confusing.

Again, I am not being negative. I just expect Taylor's site to mirror the excellence of its product.

Ooooo. Found the straight acoustics buried betwixt and between the acoustic/electrics, and only then by searching on woods rather than models.

Taylor Folks: You need to add drop downs or menu items that will preserve the distinction between acoustics and a/e's. Some of us don't need to amplify and I think all of us appreciate the differences in construction.

I second and third this about the login.....  When this was first posted, I made the visit without a requirement for username/password.  Earlier today I went back and got the pop-up screen as well.  Like Cindy, I did the same and got in.  I was not sure if this was legit or not and felt I'd wait to learn from you guys about the log-in....

It feels to me like more of a store website. Hey I'm old and don't like change so don't listen to me!

Long live the rosewood bindings and koa rosettes!! Like I said - I'm old blah blah blah.....

Just go to Guitars > By Series.  There's a horizontal scroll window at the top of the page (right under the big main image).  The GS, GA, GC, etc can be viewed by clicking on the Acoustic 8, Acoustic 7, Acoustic 6, Acoustic 5, Acoustic 4, and Acoustic 3 links.

They are also there when you browse by Body shape, but I do agree that it's a bit of a pain that there is no filter to JUST display the straight acoustics (unless I missed that too).  There are a lot of acoustic/electrics to weed through if that's NOT what you want.  Like I mentioned in my previous post, multiple filters would be nice.

I had the opportunity to meet and chat with the folks who developed the new website.  They worked their tails off to get the site ready to launch in concert with the NAMM event.  They are definitely aware of the fixes needed and appreciate your feedback.  They are planning on getting to the fixes as soon as they get back to their desks next week. They also have some very cool ideas in store for the future!  Be cool for a few days and your patience will be rewarded soon...   ;)

hi cotten,
i've seen the Bob's blog section earlier & i imagine all of the
archived entries will be reformatted & placed in there as well

i looking forward to the Taylor Limited Guitars section & i'm hoping
that in addition to your signature guitar(s), they'll include the mid 90's
400 maple, mahogany & koas too, 97 810LTD, original Artist series,
Jazzbo, the early 'deep' body GCs & all the rest of the goodies :D

hi Gutch,
thanks for sharing your experience at NAMM with us -
i can only imagine the man hours that have gone into the lastest
version of Taylor's site, both over the past year & what was required to
maintain the previous site & the information ... since it first went live,
i can recall at least 5 major revamps & countless features added also  :o

as Brian S has been visiting here & sharing so generously with us,
i imagine these comments have been seen, but speaking to or
e-mailing a Taylor CSR in PR is an option as well, for comments &.
hopefully. for compliments on what one's like about the new site

kudos to those involved & to all at Taylor for the new 2012 line  8)

I hope they get it all worked out soon. I have visited the site several times on my iPad and the experience was not good. Way too slow and formatting issues. Looking forward to the finished product.

Yes, I specifically mentioned the iPad formatting issues, and they will handle that.  They also mentioned that they are using a state of the art development package that is intended to make the site friendly to a wide variety of platforms, including tablets!(ie., HTML5 v. Flash).  It's going to be good...

EDIT:  Because my ipad thinks its smarter than me when I type... (it's not.)

I have not problem getting on to the site, but I find changing pages very slow. I also find that when "mousing over: the options on the home page (Guitar - Store - Community- Events - News - Support), that the big drop-down menu doesn't go away.

Otherwise I like the new site. Like everything else, it is unfamiliar and will take getting used to from the old site.

It sounds like you are using Internet Explorer 8. We know about this issue and will get it fixed.

But in the meantime, it's always a good idea for security and experience to use the most modern browser possible, so we suggest updating to Internet Explorer 9, or using FireFox or Google Chrome.
