Title: Must be some changes to the 2012 Taylor line
Post by: leeasam on January 09, 2012, 09:58:28 PM
http://davesguitar.com/products?newly-listed=true&sort=newest

scroll down and see that the Taylors listed say 2012 version. Whcih would mean some changes. they have a 316CE liosted too- If they are listed they have them in stock! Pics should be up with in a day or so.
The 716CE is engleman topped. no more cedar with that model. they do have a pic of that up

Nice find! As a Gibson fan I really like that dark burst they're doing on the 700s. It's smaller and darker than the typical tobacco sunburst and it looks really nice with the simple rosette and vintage style inlays.

I really hope they make that burst an option on the non-cutaway models.

Good catch! Well, I guess we now know more about the 2012 700 series Rosette;

"3 Ring Ivoroid Soundhole Rosette"

Oh, and leesam, I see this was your first post. Welcome to the forum :)

Bob had mentioned in a recent Wood & Steel that
the 316ce was coming & i see a 356ce listed as well  8)

there's also a stock pic of a 2012 12 fret mahogany -
the top is listed as being sitka, but it looks more like dark cedar to me ???

thanks for sharing, leeasam
good to see you here :)

I have snooped around here a bit the last week or so. I like many acoustics but am a big Taylor fan.  A long time AGF member.  I am really looking to try the 316CE out.  I love the Dn3 and know how the GS body makes a guitar sound huge-- looking forward to trying one out.

Dave`s is like 60 miles from me and where I buy most of my stuff. I always check the newly listed items daily ;)

oh, ok 8)

thanks st,
the top in the stock pics looked very, very dark &
the pics of in your links are of actual guitars - sweet :)

i prefer the smaller 4mm MOP dot fretmarkers on the 316ce,
rather than the 6.5mm ones & hopefully they're on the 400s too :D

let's see - wide grain sitka top, gold tuners & ab dot bridge pins ...
hold the ES & pickguard on mine, please ;D

I love the Vintage Sunburst but it makes me sad since my BTO has a similar look and I haven't seen anything like it until now :( Below is a pic of mine.

So will the 714 be cedar-topped and the 716 be englemann-topped?

I think the new bursts are plenty different. The new ones look like more of an old 30s style sunburst, while yours is a bit more subtle and tinted to match the mahogany stain.

Lots of changes and updates this year!

- Wood & Steel is in the mail, so watch for yours to arrive soon.
- New website to go live in the next 10 days
- two new Builder's Reserve offerings at NAMM (they are also in W&S)

What else do you want to know?

We're going to keep the Vintage Sunburst only on the 700's this year. It also has a "dusted" neck to match, so it's a little more consuming than a traditional "top only" burst. At some point it will go into BTO, and then Modify-a-Model after that.

Uber Limited - only sold as sets, 30 sets of each will be offered world wide.

Well being I have to drive 60 miles to get there does keep GAS down.  although I did just buy a PRS SE20 tube amp from them the day after Christmas!  Works GREAT with my Les Paul. Never had so much fun playing with a tube amp like I did in church Sunday. ALL in the TOUCH!!! gotta love a touch sensitive amp!

thanks for sharing, B :)

also, i was just wondering, since the 600 series pics showed a
614ce-N with the same fretboard inlays as the steel strings 600s,
rather than the blank fretboard that was standard on the NS64ce -
seeing that there will be GC & GA 800/900 Nylons &
the 800/900 series will be unchanged ???  wait for it ... ;)

will the 800-Ns have flamed maple binding & 800 series inlays,
along with the Cindy inlay, ab top with fretboard extension,
rosewood binding & red purfling on the 900-Ns ???

if so,
double  :o

I'm so relieved that the binding and rosette on the new 700s are ivoroid and not maple.  My latest BTO sports both rosette and binding of maple. I'd like for it to remain unique for a while anyway. I wonder whether the 500s will retain their rosewood binding and abalone rosette. I'm still scheming for a rosewood addition to my stable, but it may have to be a BTO with lots of wood everywhere and nary an inlay except for the Taylor logo on the headstock. Still, Taylor has done some nice work with the changes I've seen so far...

The 316ce and the 414ce both had similar fretboard inlays to the 514ce. The inlays definitely look much more modern than the round dot inlays. 8) Nice changes, Taylor! :)

- 800 nylons have maple binding and the 800 series inlays
- 900 nylons have 900 appointments (Cindy, et al)
- 400 nylons look like 400s

500 series is back to tortoise shell binding, with new engraved diamond inlays.
400 series has engraved dots that become ovals as they go up the fretboard (very classy!)
300 series gets the micro dots and darker stain (paste fill).

Oh, did I mention the GS Mini Mahogany?
Or the Mahogany 12-fret and Baritones?

We've been very busy!

And... we have already shipped to a handful of select dealers. We also sent new guitars to Amsterdam in December, so they should be arriving any day in Europe as well.

Happy new guitar year!

Brian
very nice offerings. i just picked up a new 516CE from 2011, love it, the cedar has won me over. So much so i've sold a few of my "other brands" and i have been looking for a cedar/EIR 716 to complement the 516. I really dig the rosette change and the burst on that new 700 and glad to hear a cedar top is available.

I now have my target set.

Jim(GR), i expect i'll be talking with you in a few months

I don't recall what brian had said but the tobacco burst on the 200 series is a great feature. As Brian mentioned there are new inlays throughout the series. I like most of them and even thought I prefer the old 600 inlays I applaude taylor for updating everything. And the amp and ukelele, while unfortunately only available as pairings with builder reserve guitars are as beautiful as I could dream up.

I just spoke with Ted, and certainly don't speak for him, but he was quite frustrated that he hasn't received any inventory of the new stuff yet. Says Taylor has been pretty hush-hush. He's hoping to hear more at NAMM obviously and have stuff shortly after that.  I have dibs on his first GSMini Mahogany. Righting a wrong as I should have bought the standard GSM I just bought from "MegaloMart" (and will be returning) from him in the first place!

I also noticed the Baby Series don't have the laser etched rosette anymore.  Seem to have a single ring inlay rosette.

Lots of nice stuff, although as someone who doesn't care for cutaway models, I sure wish they had applied some of the new features (specifically the 700 series) across the board. I also wish they would let you do a sunburst on the 300 series, especially now that it's available on the 200 series.

Oh well.

Noooooooooooooooo!!!  :(    :'(

Here's a quote from the W&S just released today (Winter 2012):
"With the emergence of the GS as a big, rich acoustic voice that balances power and balance, we’ve decided to temporarily remove the Jumbo from the Taylor line for 2012 (with the exception of the Leo Kottke Signature Models) in order to explore voicing refinement ideas in our design studio. Look for its spirited return next year."

I am flabbergasted. Maybe I am the only JUMBO lover in the world? I cannot envision a Taylor lineup WITHOUT a Taylor x15 Jumbo in the mix. Heartbreaking. I am so glad I got my 315ce a couple weeks ago. I guess my 615 and 315 will have to hold me over until 2013, when Jumbos will reportedly make a "spirited return". Can't wait to see what that actually looks like.

And I guess my DDX will have to be used... or old/new (dead) stock. I guess I can always BTO a few Jumbos if I win the lotto!

Yeah the x16 (GS) is nice, BUT IT AIN'T NO JUMBO!! Too bad, but if Taylor keeps its word, this will only be a temporary bad decision.

Answers to questions above:
- No GS Mini with cutaway in 2012
- No standard model line Jumbos in 2012
- Jumbos can be built in BTO
- New Jumbo in 2013
- Acoustic line remains mostly the same... this year... ;-)
- DDX is now the 214ce-BLK (same guitar without the thumb inlay and signature)

100% new website is days away from launching!

The only disappointing thing is that I want mass production ukes now.  Sadly I can't afford the super awesome ones they're doing now, so I'll have to wait.

On the plus side, I think they're really for real coming now....ish  :)

the new changes are cool... especially the builders reserve stuff, that's just awesome... hopefully these changes will keep everyone busy enough playing and talking so we all don't get too anxious about spring ltds hehehe

Brian, you forgot to answer my question. Any select dealers in the greater Los Angeles area with 2012 models? I'm near Westwood Music but am willing to drive an hour or so to see the new models. Thank you

Edit, nevermind Brian, just got off the phone with McCabe's and they have them.

Noooooooooooooooo!!!  :(    :'(

Here's a quote from the W&S just released today (Winter 2012):

As a lover of Taylor jumbos I am very sad by this news. :(

The re-desgined Jumbo will be back in 2013! ;)

We should hold our judgement until we hear the new Jumbo. I am excited to see where they take it.

From a Taylor Sales Rep today:

"McCabe’s and Jim’s Music Center both have about 12 – 14 new Taylors…from Babies to the top!  They’re trickling in every day.

Wait til you see the new 700 series!"

Dave, if you look at my post again you will see I edited the post. I called McCabe's and they don't have 12-14 new models but they doe have a few nylon series and a 516 so I'll wait to visiting them when they get in a few more 2012 GS models. Jim's is a two hour drive which is a bit much considering there are several dozen Taylor dealers within a forty minute drive from me. I'm in no hurry, perhaps Brian will let us know who is getting what and when.

The 700 sereis looks good but since I already have a 714ce I'm thinking 800 series. Don't ask me why. :)

Taylor lists their dealers on their website. 15 minutes and a telephone would probably get you the information you're looking for.

I got to see and play a bunch of the new 2012 models today in a local shop..
I was pretty impressed, I think all the new inlays are winners.. and the new Nylons especially were great looking....
The visuals on an 800 series Nylon were super nice in person for sure!

Im not sure I love the new rosette on the babies yet.. and they didn't have a Hog GS Mini, something Im really looking forward to checking out..
But overall, I think everyone is going to really like most of the new changes and options for sure..

Major thanx again to Brian for giving us early scoops, NAMM pix, and being a contributing part of our community of Taylor lovers here!

1. Not thrilled about the 700 series changes but, it's all good because the Acoustic line of cedar/rw remains!
2. The temp suspension of the Jumbo is ok by me.  I love Jumbos, particularly Taylor's, but so long as they're saying it'll come back with a revoicing, I can only trust that it'll come back as good as it was and then some!  :D
3.  All the incremental changes in aesthetics are part n parcel of model-year changes.  It is what it is.
4.  Am I the only one completely ambivalent about the existence of a Taylor uke? :D
5.  Huge thanks, again, to Brian for clarifying stuff ...not to mention letting a bit of the cat out of the bag.  Whattaguy!!  :D
