Title: Has anybody ordered a GA with short scale length an 1 & 11/16" nut option
Post by: Prizen on February 20, 2016, 01:20:54 PM
Hey all

I am looking to order a X14 Taylor. Most likely a 614ce, but I am also thinking about adding a second. Unsure yet as to what, possibly a 2016 revoiced 514, 524 or 324.

I have such small hands that i much prefer a 1 & 11/16" nut width. And for ultimate playability, and seen as I will have to wait to the get special order of the 1 & 11/16" width, I thought I might aswell order a short scale too.

I wonder if somebody has already gone this route and if they were happy with the result?

Thanks!

Nothing wrong with going for what you need for ultimate comfort. Just got to make sure (hopefully) it's going to be the "one". Getting a narrow nut width on a 3XX series and up sure limits you on the resale market. Throw in short scale on top of that, and you'll likely own it for life. I've been sort of interested in a short scale 416 that's been lingering on eBay for a year now. Good price, just no interest.

Yes, in fact my GA rosewood/spruce is my favorite guitar (among too many!). Short scale and 1-11/16-inch neck makes for the most playable guitar I own, and the tone is perfect for my playing style. Great for picky-strummy, can handle strumming, responsive to fingerpicking too. Concern about resale value? Why, you'll never want to sell it!

Me too. Often thought I'd like a short scale GA. Now, as time goes by, I prefer 1 11/16 nut width too.

I'm kinda the opposite, AZ.  I am getting more interested in short scale, but narrower necks are a deal-breaker for me.  I wish that some of mine were 1-7/8".

Yup, love the 1 11/16 nuts out there.  Never played a short scale one though.  All mine are standard/long scale.  That would be interesting as sometimes I find the 1 3/4 nuts a bit cumbersome in comparison.

I know that one size does not fit all, but I have been surprised that the 1-11/16 neck that a generation of players grew up on is now seen as too narrow. For me, having grown up on what for decades was the "standard" neck width, the 1-11/16 neck just feels right. Maybe that's because I have the bad habit of wrapping my thumb around the neck to fret the sixth, and yes, even the fifth string for barre chords. Can't pull that off with a 1-3/4 neck.
