Title: Maple vs Sassafras
Post by: All Together on February 15, 2016, 08:07:06 PM
There's a Sassafras LTD in the AGF classifieds at the moment and I'm thinking about contacting the seller.

Just wondering for your own personal preferences, would you choose an Andy Powers 614ce with the torrefied top or would you go for the Sassafras?

Has anyone had the opportunity to play both, and if so, which tone did you prefer, and what tonal differences did you hear?

Cheerio.

I have played both, and for me, the 614 was the clear winner.  Both were brand new out of the box, not sure what would happen over time.

I'm biased as my 712e-FLTD is Sassafras.

Visually it's a much more interesting tone wood. Tonally the 614 is going to be closer to it's best sound right out of the box with the torrification, where as the sassafras is going to be a little bit stiff and will open up more over time. The Sassafras naturally will have more complex overtones, but I've been playing mine for a year now, and I still don't think it's opened up enough to say for sure how good a wood it is.
