Title: How the guitar sounds to me ?
Post by: mavr on November 03, 2014, 10:41:28 AM
Every now and then many of us say that we like how certain guitar sounds,...

With this poll I am asking everyone here willing to "testify" what precisely do you mean when you talk about how certain guitar sounds to you,...

I am offering only 3 possible answers, i.e., there are no "in between" or "other" choices available  ;D

Eagerly looking forward to get your answers  :)

interesting that you added a "when recorded" option because that's the biggest challenge of recording these guitars, to get the tone you hear when playing acoustically...I thought the lr baggs lyric was phenomenal at doing this...

The complete acoustic guitar experience for me includes (me) playing it and feeling its vibration besides hearing it. I like to play in a "live room" (fairly empty, no carpeting, etc), since that provides the most immediate sound response, accompanied by a little natural reverb.

Listening to a recording of my guitar or someone else playing my guitar feels like second generation to me. They're no substitutes for the experience above....

I get great pleasure when a fine  player picks up one of my guitars, but that's more a matter of what my guitar is capable of rather than how it sounds.  The latter is a personal thing so I consider the guitar's "sound" when I play it (and feel it)

sorry, but my answer is not quite as cut & dry -
i like what i hear when the guitar is recorded (not my guitar, not my playing) - not always, but usually

i like what i hear when the guitar is played (not necessarily my guitar, not my playing) - not always, but usually

i like what i hear when the guitar is played thru a powered monitor or PA (my guitar, not always my playing) - not always, but usually

i like what i hear & feel when i play my guitar (my guitar, my playing) - usually, unless it's one that's i'm looking to find a new home for

i like what i hear when i play my guitar in front of a sliding glass door in a room with hardwood floors or ceramic tile with no overhead fans running,
mic'd into a powered monitor with a direct out into reference headphones with one ear on (my guitar, my playing) - yes if it's a keeper, but if not, please see above

short answer - it depends

I find it fascinating how much I think I like the way any of my guitars sound, until I hear someone else play them and I'm on the other side of the soundhole, then I really like what I hear...huge difference!

Thanks Michael - I guess I misread the question. While I still hold to my answer above, I have to say that I have on many occasions enjoyed other people's acoustic guitar-playing, whether live or recorded. I do like the sound of a well-played acoustic guitar - it makes me smile!

i don't think you misread the question SF & to me your answer is the
most valid one, based purely on the criteria of the three choices listed -
but for me, it's all of the above depending on the conditions & situation &
there are some other scenarios as well, so i expanded on that, meaning from
my perspective it could be all 3 or none, in addition to a couple of others

it's like having to choose between vanilla, chocolate or strawberry -
no neapolitan, cookie dough, strawberries n creme, or lactose intolerant :-\

given only one of the three choices, i guess i'm just not willing to testify to one ;)
