Post by: azslacker on March 21, 2014, 04:24:10 PM
Nice little discount code. http://www.elderly.com/share/coup10off313.html
Even good on used guitars, except for consignments.
A couple of nice new and used Taylors in stock right now.

Elderly is my local music store. I have been a customer of theirs since 1974 (they have gotten way too much of my money in the last 40 years). Their service and prices are hard to beat.

Does Chris work on the sales floor? Need to know where to look for him. They have MANY employees....most who work behind the scenes. According to their website, there are 4 Chris' that work there.  :-\

I called them the other day asking for an "in hand" description of the 2 baritone SLTDs they had in stock.
The guy was really nice and said someone would call me back....but they never called back.
They must be super busy or they sold both of the 320e SLTDs they had in stock....or they would have called me back right?!

Like any business, sometimes you have to do a little follow-up and take the initiative. I would call them back and explain. If it is on their webpage, they still have it. They are good at keeping that up to date.

Great resource to have in your backyard.  Closest I have is Mandolin Bros., about an hour away.

Years ago, I used to live in Michigan about 90 minutes away from Elderly.  Every time I head back east to visit family, I try to make a pilgrimage to the "holy land".  Last time I went up to the counter to buy something, and the fellow asked if I had a customer number.  I replied "xxxx".  He then asked for the other three digits.  He seemed shocked to meet someone with barely a four digit customer number.  So I have been at least on their mailing list since sometime in the late 70's.  Elderly is still my #1 go-to when mail ordering anything, from little items like strings or tuners up to Martin or Rainsong guitars.

I've done a lot of business with Elderly, but I tend to shop around for the best prices. Free shipping is always a big plus. Lately, Sweetwater has has been my "go to" place for online gear orders. I call the same sales guy, and get very good service. He usually calls me a few days after I recieve my order, to make sure everything arrived, and I'm happy with it.

I have had only a few interactions with Elderly, but none were good.

I do not trust them at all.

Elderly needs to learn and practice honesty and humility.

I respectfully disagree. I have been a customer there since 1974. Never had a bad experience. Your comments are the first I've heard of that have been that negative. And since I grew up and worked my career near Elderly, I know many customers and workers there.

elderly had a 91, or 92(?) square shoulder redwood top 710, made in santee :o
that would have been a nice one, i think, as it looked well-played in 8)

Elderly started as a vintage instrument dealer primarily. Hence the name. They have been doing so for 42 years. They know their stuff and how to deal with people.

I agree with the others - I've been a customer of Elderly for years and have received only top shelf service and support.  I've purchased everything from high end Martins and Taylors to cheap Blueridge guitars.  There have also been many times when I've walked into their store (which is very cool in an eclectic old school way, BTW), spent two hours + playing everything in the high end room, stumbling through the miscellaneous room to strum a banjo or mando, and finally walking out with only a CD or a book.  The staff is always gracious and more than willing to answer questions or just let you browse, regardless of how much you spend.

You are so right, Gutch....spot on, actually. BTW, the current building is an old IOOF Hall (Independent Order of Odd Fellows), which provides a perfect atmosphere for the business. It was built around 1915. They moved in there in 1984. Prior to that, they were located in East Lansing across from Michigan State (my Alma Mater and 2014 Rose Bowl Champions, btw!).

MGAP,

I have been to Gryphon (NorCal), the old Buffalo Bros and McCabes (SoCal), Denver Folklore Society, and Dusty Strings (Seattle)  A trip to Elderly meets or surpasses any of them.  Talk about a candy store for musicians........

If I ever travel back east again, I hope to hit Mandolin Bros on Staten Island and maybe Gruhn's in Nashville to round out the collection.

sounds pretty good :)

save for trying to put together a "TaylorStock" style gathering, maybe not an entire
weekend, but a slightly extended tour & then hitting the woodpile to spec Customs,
which purchase arrangements could be made through one's dealer of choice 8) , perhaps
an event either in a more central geographical location or one that's closest to the
greatest number of UTGF members that would be available to participate on a given date -

tarpley's in amarillo is about the closest to the middle of the country that i can think of

A forum gathering seems like a fun idea; to attend one, I'd do Amarillo for sure -- but I'm only a 6.5-hour drive from there...  Less than three hours if I can fly myself up to Tradewind Airport (within a few miles of Tarpley's) and cajole someone into shuttling me over to the store...

But wouldn't someplace in Kansas be more geographically central to the country...?  Granted, I have no idea where most of the folks on this forum live...

If we really wanted to do a forum gathering right, we should meet up at the Taylor factory...  'Course, that's a real hike for folks in the eastern part of the country...  But maybe with enough advance notice, they'd give a Taylor forum group a bit of VIP treatment, and it'd be worth the trip...?

here's a couple of promising locations in kansas -
mass street

or senseney

it may look like a shorter distance, as the crow flys, but from say northern california,
(healdsburg area) it's just under 1,400 mi to amarillo & about 1700 to wichita

besides, there's a pretty 8) place to get grub in amarillo ;)

Not trying to talk anyone out of Amarillo; as 'central' gathering spots go, that one is pretty convenient for me...  I lived in Lawrence, KS for about 7 years, so I'm familiar with, and have friends still in, that area.  Only been to Wichita sporadically, but also have friends there.  So those places, although farther to travel, wouldn't be bad from my standpoint either...

Yeah, I heard about that gal; can't view the video at the moment, but apparently she's not very big either...  Those food challenges are all fun -- to watch; I prefer to enjoy my meal without wolfing it down...  It all sounds good to me, though!

probably the thing to do, if the idea of having a gathering becomes more definite, & the planning
begins, is to find out where it would be the most convenient for the greatest number of participants -
the geographic "center" may or may not be the best choice, other than being of "equal inconvenience" for all ;)

This would be pretty awesome. Maybe people could play some of the jewels you all have. Then there's this:

Most number of Taylor guitars played at the same time = Guiness record  8)

A guy I know back in OH 40 yrs ago works there. Tell Chris Mike said hi! When he looks at you funny tell him it's Jeanies brother....

Would that be Chris Rietz, the manager of the Books & Records Dept?  He also does some of the guitar demo videos.  I worked for Chris at Elderly for a while in books & records in 1997.   A fun place.
A few years after that I moved to Minneapolis to be near my grand children.
