214ce SB DLX

the 210ce K DLX has yet to be added to the website & for now it looks
like the BLK & SB models are being released only in the 214ce initially,
with nubone nut & saddle on acoustics, nubone nut/tusq saddle on ES/ES-T models &
single ring rosette in pearloid replaces the previous 3 ring style on the BLK & SB models
-
Oh wow, this looks even more like the '11 414ce limiteds, plus gloss.
-
pretty much these

but, with a nubone nut, matching inner veneer, the original 800/93-00
500 series small slotted diamond fretboard inlays & elixir PB strings
the SB DLX & BLK add the single ring pearloid rosette too 8)

Interesting thing is that my DLX has 80/20s on it, unless Elixir is making the PBs the same color as 80/20s?

hmmm ???
if the wound strings appear brass in color, rather than copper, they are most likely 80/20s -
just curious if the first few digits of the serial # start with 2111XX3 or 2112XX3 because if so, then the
guitar was started in november or december of 2013 & it's possible the strings weren't "updated to PBs yet :-\
the inner veneer on your 214ce SB should be rosewood
-
Yep, according to serial number page at Taylor, it's got an 11/27/2013 birthday.
And yes, the inner veneers on the sides and back are rosewood. Looks much better than the light veneers on the first 214ce I had.
It also has a rosewood truss rod cover instead of black plastic.

I'd love to have one of those black 214's.

you haven't had an NGD in a while Lizzy... i think your deserving ! ;D if you made your bed this morning and didnt threaten your other half with bodily harm for a 24 hr period( sometime in the last 18 months), you definitely should get one !

I'd love to have one of those black 214's.
i played a 12 214ce BLK at my FLGS before picking up my 214ce & it sounded crisper than the 214ce SB they had -
the 11 Doyle deluxe DDX model, 12 214ce BLK & some early 13s, had maple veneer back & sides & a maple neck
the DDX had a bound fretboard & offset thumbnail Chet style fretmarkers, while the BLK model had an unbound
fretboard & 6.33mm dot fretmarkers, with the mid/late 13 models going to sapele veneer back & sides & sapele neck
it's interesting that this DDX prototype basically became the 214ce BLK, other than
the 3 ring rosette, as it has the unbound fretboard, dot inlays & sapele laminate -

the start date on it is may 19th, 2010 & the DDX was introduced at winter NAMM 11

satin transblack maple veneer back & sides, with a transblack maple neck & solid black gloss top would be cool 8)
&, sure, why not put the ES2 in there, seeing that the 14 214ce DLX has the ES electronics now :-\

That Doyle is beautiful and sounds great:).

Like how Taylor has spun "laminates" into "layered woods". Sanitary engineering, anyone?
The Pontus Brooklynensis awaits.
-
again, no spin, as it is a more accurate description, imho
definition of laminate - merriam webster
3
b : to unite (layers of material) by an adhesive or other means
3 layers of real wood, 2 layers of adhesive -
not to be confused with this type of laminate
to cover (something) with a thin layer of clear plastic for protection
laminate formica countertops or high pressure laminate is a different process -
i've played all solid wood guitars that, to my ear, do not have the depth or presence
of a 100/200/GS mini & to me it doesn't matter what name is placed on the process
a 100LTD series with a revised top bracing pattern, protein glue for the braces & back & sides
construction & hide glue for the bridge could be interesting, as it already has a matte 2.0 finish
-
I just got the call from Sweetwater today!!!! My 214ce Blk Deluxe with Rosewood lam. & ES will ship tomorrow!!!! ;D
-
Seems like the "layered wood" verbiage is to separate themselves from those HLP Martins with the photo wood grain.
-
kprusac, that guitar will make you smile...I'm really enjoying mine thus far.
Planning a few upgrades:
Rosewood tuner buttons from Bob Nichols
Ebony bridge pins
Elixir PB HD lights when available
As far as the laminate thing, my ears can't really tell the difference. I previously had a Masterbilt DR-500MCE, and the 214ce sounds much better in my opinion. Besides, with the matching inner veneer someone would be hard pressed to know this guitar is laminate unless I tell them.

Thanks Shawn! I can't wait to get it! My wife has already asked about my plans to start "tweaking" it. I have some gold Grovers & strap button in my stash, along with some Bob Colosi items to install on it! I love messing around with them almost as much as playing them.
I'm like you, my ear is not that refined to really hear the difference between lam & solid. My audiences will never know either.....wife & grandkids ;)

congrats 8)
i've only known of maple & sapele veneer 214ce BLK models & the DLX is listed as being sapele,
but if there was a LTD with black stain rosewood & gloss black top, that'd be pretty 8) imho -
this is oak, but the concept is there, still allowing the wood grain to show

Michael,
I like the grain on Ash too...

Before I ordered I called Sweetwater to double check on it being Rosewood and even called Taylor to make sure they offered it on the 214ce blk deluxe. I also had only seen sapele listed until the I read the detailed description on the one from SW. I would have loved a Satin finish also but will settle for gloss.
