Title: NGOD - 512ce Cedar/Mahogany
Post by: TaylorGirl on March 06, 2013, 04:15:58 PM
Today was my big day.  I ordered my Cedar/Mahogany 512ce from Elderly Instruments in Lansing, MI.

I'm primarily a fingerstyle player, so this is going to be my dream guitar.  It will complement my 414 nicely.  The only option I went with was that I ordered it without a pickguard.  But, as suggested by a member here on the forum, I'm having Taylor throw in one of their clear, static pickguards in the case.  The Taylor buyer (Jason) told me that it could be here as quick as 2 weeks, but up to probably 4 weeks, depending on whether they have one like this in the works already.  Jason said that Taylor is one of the best companies for getting orders to their customers within a reasonable amount of time.

My husband wanted me to get the GC that I wanted.  What a super guy!  So, after much thought and trial, I decided that the 512ce would be exactly what I'm looking for.  Then, I got to thinking....this is sort of an anniversary present too.  This year will be 40 years since I started playing guitar.  I took my first lesson on 9/11/73.  So, in addition to it being a gift from my wonderful husband, it will also be special in that regard.

Did I say I was excited?   :) :D ;D

Hi, I have the cedar/hog 12 Fret on order. Also very very excited. I was wondering about how a bone nut and saddle would make it sound  ???, but that will be an upgrade for the future after much playing in.

Has anyone upgraded a cedar/hog to a bone nut and saddle? How did it go?

Congratulations on your new guitar/anniversary gift!  I've bought several guitars from Elderly over the years. I've never stepped foot in the store... but they sure are a bunch of great people to do business with. One used Taylor which I bought from them, a 415 jumbo... was actually in much better condition than I expected.. almost new, even though it was 10 years old.  Anyway... enjoy that new guitar for many more anniversaries!

Thanks Joseph.  Yes, Elderly's is wonderful.  I've been a customer there since 1974.  If you ever have the opportunity to visit the store, you should.  It's my "candy store". They've gotten way too much of my money over the years.  :)  I have my Taylor 355 there on consignment right now:

You are welcome TaylorGirl... Great looking 355 you have for sale. I am sure they will be able to sell it soon..   I would love to get to beautiful Northern Michigan again... someday! And that would definitely include a trip to Elderly...hmmm.... let's see, if I could get there in July, I could enjoy 2 of my great loves. Do the Michigander Bicycle Tour... then visit Elderly for the first time and play a bunch of guitars, since I won't be able to walk for a while.  :)

Thank you SF and CJ. Yes, I put a lot of thought into this, and when I started thinking about different considerations, I would end up right back at the 512. So, I really think that is the guitar for me. There are guitars with more pizzazz, but all around for me, I think I made a good choice. My husband liked the sound of it too.

Congrats on the upcoming 40th anniversary!  I hear that you only get better at strumming and finger styling after you turn 40.

Got word that Elderly was supposed to get my guitar today. Then they have to do their thorough set-up. I did a stupid thing and moved 170 miles away in 2006, so I'll have to plan a good day to go pick it up. Still getting snow here in northern MI. Why not have it shipped, you ask.......because I never turn down a good excuse to visit Elderly, my "candy" store since 1974. Also, have to deliver a few cases of our pure maple syrup to our friends in Lansing. So, looks like one day next week I'll be flying high. :) (....and not because of the sweet maple syrup ;) )

Okay, two questions/comments:
1. Congrats on your new baby being delivered today!  Can't wait to see proud Momma pics.
2. How can we get some of your Taylorized Syrup delivered to the west coast?

2. Taylorized Maple Syrup, LOL. With the shipping costs, probably would make it way too expensive. Plus, the PO frowns on our shipping glass bottles of syrup. Sorry.  :( It's excellent stuff, though.

Well, maybe you'll just have to create a BTO that is inspired by the color of your maple syrup?  That would be a great story to read in the Wood & Steel.  Could be good for your business...just an idea.

I've spent many thousands at Elderly over the years. I probably helped put Stan Werbin's kids through college . . . if he has kids. That's going to be a fun ride to pick up your guitar. I've take rides like that. I love a nice cedar and mahogany small body.

May your guitar play and sound as smooth and sweet as the maple syrup you produce.

TaylorGirl, the business is forming as we speak thanks to Fretted.  I can see it now:  "Guitar Maple Syrup...because it plays smooth and sweet."   ;D

Cool idea!  I never thought of that.  It's too late though, I can't justify another guitar.  Cedar/Hog would remind me of maple syrup too (nice golden/reddish color). I did just get a custom mountain dulcimer and the luthier did engrave a maple leaf in the headstock for me, because of our little business.

He has at least one daughter.  So, I'm sure he appreciates your business over the years.  I helped a lot too.
Thanks!

Thanks, shorty. Cynthia is a super gal. I see her and her husband frequently at dulcimer festivals. He's a national champion dulcimer player (Doug Berch) and luthier.A lot of great folks there, you are right.

Yes, I'm just a little excited.  :) It won't be as impressive as your stable of guitars, but it will be special to me. BTW, your wedding photos were cool on your site.  I visited Taylor with my husband (who doesn't play), and it made my day to be there with him. We both really enjoyed our visit.
