I am growing increasingly impatient for the delivery of my new GA5, cedar top, tobacco sunburst, ES installed. I was told it would be delivered in 45 days (which is now past) and now have been told it won’t be shipped until 6/12. Bummer.
I know that Taylor builds 100,000 guitars each year so I can imagine the “build” schedule is complex. But I’ve been advised that Taylor will prefer large orders from the big box music stores when scheduling. My guitar was bumped to fit in an order from a big music store.
I guess that makes sense business wise, but I’m not exactly a casual shopper purchasing a low end Taylor. I think they need to be careful to keep their long time, loyal customers happy. I’m not sure how many of us on the UTGF who own multiple Taylors purchase off the store room floor of a big music store. My guess is not too many.

Eeesh. Sorry about that! It'll be worth the wait though ;D

Read the thread I started entitled "Am I Being Too Impatient" for some good replies from both perspectives.

I placed my BTO order on 4/06/12 and haven't really heard anything since, other than Taylor said no when I requested an ovangkol headstock overlay. I'm sure by now there is an estimated completion date on my guitar, but it might be better that I don't know when it will be done. I'm surprised someone told you that it would only be 45 days because it sounds like even modified stock models fall into the 6-8 weeks category at Taylor. My dealer told me to be prepared for 10 weeks on the BTO, so that is what I am expecting. It always stinks to have an underestimated delivery date because then you get your hopes up and end up disappointed when the schedule isn't met. Sorry to hear your guitar is late, but it sounds like it will be worth the wait when it arrives. Be sure to post some pics.

Lucky you. So that should be around 9 weeks since you placed your order?

Yup ... just about 9 exactly by the time I get it.

Hmmmmm.
Well, one particular "big box" stores spends millions a year with Taylor. There's no reason why you should be kept more happy than them but, in, all fairness, there's no reason they should be kept more happy than you. That said, price point doesn't dictate the value of a shopper.
Business is business. Taylor is in business to make money. If push comes to shove, they're going to defer to the customer that's spending millions upon millions of dollars a year. You say that they should want to keep their long-time loyal customers happy. I can assure you, by moving your GA5 to a big box order, they did exactly that. That big box store is their customer, too, and is no less valuable as a customer than anyone else...

i've bought a few Taylors, & many other guitars, from 'big box' stores,
some 'exclusives' & some that just had the tone & playability i wanted

imho, i wouldn't consider even a 4+ month wait excessive for a non-standard model,
especially since the Spring LTDs are in the process of being built, holidays, etc
just out of curiousity, i'm wondering what the average
wait time is for any of the other large scale builders ???

I mentioned my experience in another thread.
When I worked at Trader, I ordered a Martin D-35 for a customer. It took about six months, and that was a standard build. I had another customer who wanted a D-28 with tortoise binding. I was quoted a year. The guitar was actually delievered in about 9-1/2 months.
I just laugh and shake my head when people complain about waiting two or three months...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there's quite the waiting process for the wood to dry correctly to the right humidity level etc to use it right?

Well, yes but, generally speaking, that doesn't really come into play. If you order a Mahogany Taylor today, you're not going to have to wait for some Mahogany to be selected and then dried before they start building your guitar. There's Mahogany already there, ready to use...

i saw that too & i wasn't sure if it was a common occurrence or if it was just in that particular instance -
also, if one lives on the same coast/area as the factory & decides to order from a dealer on the opposite side
of the country, then there's shipping from the factory to the dealer & then from the dealer to the customer
45 - 60 (working days), 9 - 12 weeks, up to 2 weeks for shipping (or longer depending on the continent)
holidays, company breaks vacation, NAMM, spring & fall LTDs ... 4 months + seems very reasonable to me ::)

Fender used to have a website that dealers could log on to so they could look at availability.
I ordered a guy an Fender American Standard Strat once. A guitar in the color and with the right fretboard wasn't in stock, nor was it shown to be on the production schedule. He got his guitar almost six months after he ordered it. The only things we were particular about were the color (Black) and the fretboard (Maple), and it took almost six months.
For a freakin' Strat...

I recently took delivery of a new GS5 after about a 5 week wait. I like a dark tone for fingerstyle, and the cedar over mahogany sounds great. Very rich, syrupy, even. Sounds like playing a fretboard full of zen meditation bells. Playing in open tunings opens up whole worlds of warm tones; it's a transporting instrument and seems to be sounding better every day. The sustain is impressive.
I'm sure that reading this review will help you feel like the time is flying by as you wait for your GA5. ;D

Thanks Joe! Now I'm even more anxious. I'm playing a lot in DADGAD these days and looking forward to using the guitar primarily to fingerpick. Sounds like it should be more than up to the task!
