Looking for feedback on the above. Sounds and tone. Anyone A/B with the standard model?
Thanks,
-
I played one last week and really liked the tone, but there were no spruce top model to a/b it with. I bought a used BBT the next day and have been playing the daylights out of it.
hmmm, I wonder it the BTO team would do a hog topped Big Baby?

I a/b'd it and bought the mahogany...I felt the mahogany was a better more focused strummer, that is, that each string better maintained its own tone when strummed. I also found that it had bolder, rounder tone...more bass response. It seemed like a more "mature" guitar, if you will. For me, it was an easy decision.

to my ear, the mahogany top mini has warmer, more pronounced mids & more balanced trebles
whereas the sitka top has more 'snap', the low end is 'punchy' & the trebles have more 'sparkle' -
the mahogany top model complements the sitka top quite well, imho, & i like 'em both a lot :)

Thanks guys.

Well, I visited Jim in his shop today and had him order a GS Mini with Mahogany top. I played around with the regular GS Mini he had there to make sure that it held up well in DADGAD, which it did. Lotsa bass out of those things!
He ordered a couple, so I'll be able to A/B the sound and look. I'm going to have him "hair dryer" off the pick-guard too.
I'll start a NGD thread when it arrives!

Can't wait to hear more about it! I've been emailing my local guy about it. He doesn't have mahogany in but based on everything I've been reading and the demo videos I've seen, I just might pull the trigger myself. Tax refund just hit the bank...
Just curious, is it aesthetics that some don't want the pickguard? Are there other reasons? I'm not a heavy strummer myself but am so used to seeing it every day that it looks odd at first without. The wood is just gorgeous, though.

I have been into my closest dealer(75miles away) :'( and each time he has just sold the last Mahogany top GS Mini, so I have not been able to test one. ??? Uhmm. a story or are they that popular?
As a owner I would suggest stocking a few, no disrespect implied, ;) because they are actually great store, but new to Taylor.

1) I think the pick-guard looks very out of place, so aesthetics I guess. I play mostly fingerstyle, so I don't need it anyway. If I change my mind later, I'd put a clear one on (like my Lowden has).
2) Jim told me that the GSM's in general are fast movers, and the GSMM's more so. I don't think it's a story. If your dealer is really moving them that quickly, he shouldn't object to holding one for a week or so until you can see it. If you don't want it, it'll sell anyway.

I agree.
I do have a GS Min 2012 limited on order, in maple. They told me that I can have my choice of the 3 limiteds that they have coming in. I still want to try a Hog. So I hope they will have one in when the 3 limiteds come in.

Here's a commercial comparing the two. Not a huge difference, for sure.

Considering he plays it differently too! Nothing up my sleeve....

I a-b'd them and found the Mini-M, to my ears, sounded much more full and warmer. I bought one right away.
