Thinking about getting a 2010 ltd Koa 500 guitar. Thinking what makes a 500 series a 500 series and in my mind it is Mahogany and cedar. So if you substitute Koa for Mahogany and Sitka for Cedar do you really have a 500 series still? They all have the same forward shifted bracing. Does anybody know what similarities there are?

I am new to the Taylor thing and pretty new to guitars all together. My opinion, which really isn't worth much, is that I would prefer to see Ltds kept closer to the series that they are representing. As an examPle, the 4xx series Ltds should be Ovangkl. That is what the series is based on. 6xx should have maple. The ltd version could have gloss sides and back, wood binding, better inlays, headstock bling or something else to set it apart but keep the series true to its roots.

Agree. Simple idea and would make for a spectacular 4xx series.

I have the 2010 516 LTD and actually fell into it by accident. At the time I didn't really know anything about Taylors so when I went to the shop looking for a 516 with a cedar top I left with the LTD Koa. Glad I have it BC I do LOVE IT!! But I have since learned how the Taylor numbering system works and wondered myself about why the 500 cedar/hog went to spruce/koa for the LTD.

Agreed. The spruce/mahog sounds more like a "custom" than a 500, even if it is a Ltd. They are what they are, of course, but the name/series throws it off, IMHO.
