It came on slowly, just a little tickle and the feeling that something wasn't right.
I tried to ignore it and drank lots of water, got plenty of rest but it seems as if I'm not going to shake this anytime soon.
What should I look for in a cure? I see Taylor makes all kinds of 12-strings - what are your suggestions?
-
I cured my 12 string fever last year. She's not a Taylor, but my Carvin C980-12 isn't a bad alternative. AMS just sent me a box full of new strings, I can't wait to get the Elixir's on her.
I'll monitor this thread in case I have a relapse.

TaylorPlayer,
I too had the 12-string GAS recently. Cured it with an order for GS-K-12 last week.
Had a chance to play about a dozen Taylor and Martin 12-strings yesterday at Wildwood Music, and walked away confident I made the right choice. I love my Martin's, but I really felt the Taylor neck was much easier to play. I think the koa on the GS-K-12 is going to really compliment the large body.
Funny thing -- I forgot how long it took to tune up a 12-string;-)

I bought a GS8e-12. I think that did the job at curing my GAS...for now.

For 12 strings, my vote would go for the GA-K-12. My friend has one, and not only does it sound and play great, it stays in tune!!! If you've played a lot of 12's, then you know what I mean!

I've been thinking off and on about a 12 string in a GS shape.

hi TP516,
i was able to play a 316ce at my local music store & it was
'oh-so-close' to a 97 414K i had brought in to A/B it with -
i didn't have time to check out the 356ce they had & i only vaguely remember the
02 454ceLTD imbuia i had a while back, but i imagine the 3 would sound a good bit
deeper & warmer than the 650 maple dreadnought 12 string that's sitting here ;)
i'm planning on making a trip down thataways again on wednesday, so i'll give the
356 a whirl & see how it does - i wish they had a 456ce & a GA3/4-12 too, though :-\

If you're not set on a Taylor... or an acoustic...

I only have a few guitars so a 12-string has always seemed like a luxury item, but if I ever wanted one, this is what I'd get. :)
But back on topic... as for Taylors, I agree that the GS 12-strings look pretty cool. The 700 series GS they showed in the W&S looked really nice.

I've owned a couple of 12-strings over the years.
I love 'em when I first get them, but their allure always seems to wane for me...
-
My first Taylor was a 455, and there's no doubt that Taylor makes great 12 strings. However, and I include myself in this, they are not for everybody. I would suggest getting a used 355 which plays and sounds great but will bring you into the 12 string world at a more reasonable price point. If it's still for you after six months of fairly steady use, then you'll have a better idea as to what you might want....
-
i was able to play the 356ce & i was absolutely stunned :o
i've played a good number of the jumbo 12'ers & had a GA
(454ceLTD imbuia), but for me that 356ce was hands-down
the best sounding 12 string i have ever played/heard, in terms
of depth & balance, with warm mids & it was not overly 'jangly' :)

If you don't care whether it's new, you may wish to search the used market for your 12. I have a 555 from the year 2000; bought it in 2007. It's now 12 years old and has opened up beautifully. Plays as easily as either of the 6-strings I own. And with a jumbo body, you almost don't even need an amp.

Thanks everyone, I love reading your thoughts BC everyone here knows so much about the guitars.
I have played the 356ce and LOVED IT!!! It's the only 12 string I have played tho' so I don't have anything to compare it with.
I'm going to a store tomorrow that has Taylors, Martin's, and Santa Cruz's so I hope they have some 12 strings in stock.
-
I'd also suggest starting out with a GA3. They sound great, stay in tune pretty well, and may be all the 12 string you'll ever want...

I just found a 355 with a Fishman Eclipse pickup over at the AGF for a XXXX. New ones are about $XXX0 so I thought I got a pretty darn good deal.
The good buys are out there!
edited for price

Nice guitar!! Question - do the Taylor 12-strings stay in tune pretty well? I have heard stories of having to spend alot of time tuning the 12-strings.
Sadly, the store I went to yesterday is no longer a Taylor dealer, they didn't have much of anything. It's getting harder for the indies to stay in business and the owner said they just can't keep up with the inventory/purchasing requirements from the big guys. I'm going back to the larger Taylor dealer in the area here next month so I'll talk with the guys then, I just don't like going to the big-box stores anymore.
I just got a new ukulele ::) so I'd better lay-off on the instrument acquisition for awhile or else my non-instrument playing spouse will have something to say about that..... >:(
Besdies, it will give me time to get him used to the idea of why I need a 12-string..... ;D

My Taylor bto jumbo 12 string has scratched my itch for a 12 string completely.
