Can someone shed some light on this please? The Grand Concert 362ce, cutaway comes with 12-53 guage strings. The almost identical 362e, comes with 10-47 guage. It is a bit thin sounding, even for a small guitar. The only design difference I can see is the cutaway. I asked Taylor about 12-53s on my 362e, the responding gentleman noted it would be OK only if it were tuned down to D. I am simply wondering if this was incorrect info. Are there design differences in the cutaway for which I am unaware, that allows 12-53s? I am of course seeking to put 12-53s on this and not tune it down. thank you.

It sounds like two guitars got mixed up. The 362 (whether with the added ce or not) is a 12-string guitar that takes 10-47s. All Taylor 12-string guitars take thinner strings because they are doubled, adding significantly more string tension. The 12-53s belong to the 312, 322, or other 6-string guitars. Clear?

I was just going by Sweetwaters current inventory, they today have the 362ce, cutaway 12 string, and the 12-53s are what is specified at the string guage for this guitar. I guess Sweetwater could be incorrect. thanks,

Did more research and finally found info on the 362ce on Taylors website. They noted 10-47s. So, it looks that Sweetwater has the string specs incorrect for the 362ce at 12-53

For a six-string standard light gauge 53-12 (165 pounds) is good, but all Taylors can actually handle mediums too (56-13, ~180 pounds). My various Taylor guitars wore each gauge, often by chance. I play both gauges at standard E-e tuning. If tuning down I usually go for mediums.
There is a heavier 54-12 twelve string set intended to be tuned down at least one whole step. (At E-e tuning that twelve string set yields 336 pounds of tension. Yikes!) A twelve-string uses standard light sets (47-10) for 250 pounds of total tension.
Data is power; You can look up the information for yourself here:
