Broke down my 2010 GS6 and look what I found on the back of the neck shim.
Thickness of the tape is about .005". The shim was a 16,the largest in my shim kit, giving the largest difference between top and bottom of the heel.Top shim was a 10,resulting in a difference of about 6. 6 what? I'm not sure.

???
the painter's tape will not be as stable or allow as 'direct of a connection' as the bare wood shim,
the taper would not be as consistent & .005 is a significant amount, imho ... how many layers of tape ???
i would be a little :o
if i discovered that too :-\

Only 1 layer.Surprised me also.I'm kinda glad to see them ol' boys at Taylor gotta little redneck left in'em. ;)

this was on a brand new guitar that no one else had ever 'opened 'er up' before ???
hmm ... :-\

Yep . Never opened.Still had the white filler gunk at the bottom of the heel.

Ummmm what are we looking at - is it bad? ??? Seriously, I'd really like to learn about what you guys are discussing, I like to absorb as much info as I can about guitars in general.

it's a piece of painter's tape on one side of a neck heel shim -
it is unexpected, more than anything, imho, as i imagine there should be
a shim/set that would allow neck to the set correctly without the tape
it looks the tape got 'mashed' closest to the slot in the shim,
rather than being compressed evenly across the entire surface -
that's just not something i would expect to see, even on a baby T
i've seen things like plastic shims under USTs on CE models from other
large scale builders, but never on a Taylor & if if i were to find a shim
under a UST on a Fishman or ES-T Taylor that had never been 'adjusted',
other than at the factory, i would be quite surprised as well ... unusual :-\
