Title: What Taylor is R.E.M. playing?
Post by: Driveblind on March 09, 2021, 10:06:45 AM
Yesterday was the 10th anniversary of the release of R.E.M.'s last album, Collapse Into Now. They shared some studio pictures on IG, including some that show Peter Buck strumming a Taylor. Can someone identify which model this is? Is this a jumbo (x15) model? I know that he's played a jumbo Guild in the past. https://www.instagram.com/p/CMLBi24r9aV/

It has the "Cotton Music" fretboard inlays formerly used on the 6 series (Maple back and sides). Def a Jumbo.
If so it would be Taylor's fine approximation of a Gibson or Guild Jumbo...
Hard to tell with the dark sunburst, but the butt appears it may be flamed maple.
Probably a 615 sunburst.
Maybe Taylor has some info on their  byzantine website. Good luck finding the info if it exists. Hahaha

Any other sleuths lurking here???

My own sleuthing didn't find a definitive answer on this one, but I did come across some pictures of him playing a different 615. https://equipboard.com/pros/peter-buck/taylor-615-jumbo-acoustic-guitar

Based on the inlay pattern on the fretboard of that sunburst  guitar, I'd say that it is also a 615, the old jumbo shape. Very nice!
