Can't wait to see pictures. I would love to hear about your BTO experience and how you ended up with this combination.

Just read your thread over on AGF, man I hope you are feeling better about things. I can't wait to see pics. Everyone is getting thier sinkers today. Mine will be here later this month. Dialing down expectations in 5,4,3...

Nice guitar, but I'm very disappointed in the "premium" woods-- very standard looking to me. After waiting this long and paying this much I wanted much more than a glorified 400 series Taylor.
Here's a link to more thoughts and pix.

Give it a while, it really is a beauty.
-
Sorry that you are disappointed with the appearance but that is one of the finest pieces of Sinker that I have ever seen. Really, I don't know how it could get any better.
I am a little confused about the back. That wood too is absolutely gorgeous--much prettier than most of the Ovankol that I see. I have never heard of a "flame Ovankol" and don't see that option on the BTO sheet. Did Taylor charge for "flame"? The wood they gave you really looks like a premium piece. The even grain is very unusual in this wood and frankly should be better tonally than something with the typical uneven figuring in most Ovankol. The coco wedge is stunning. Tone and playability are the most important and the diciest part of a BTO. Be careful before kissing this beauty good bye.
Overall, this is an absolutely magnificient guitar and it's great that you like the tone and playabilty. If you are really disappointed with the looks I am pretty certain you can return it to Taylor but I would not be hasty. I cannot imagine getting a prettier guitar in this combination. It is much, much more than a 400 series Taylor (no Sinker or coco on those, after all).
Except for the size of the nut, I would take this guitar off of your hands no questions asked. It really, really is stunning in my opinion.

Amen to the post above. That ovangkol reminds me of the high grade rosewood they use and I much prefer the grain of yours to the one linked in your AGF post. The sinker and ovangkol seem to match really really well and I have no doubt that was a consideration when selecting the woods for your guitar.
And call me crazy but that case looks nicer than the standard brown ones I've seen. Shows your guitar off better too IMO.
Everything about this guitar says "custom" and would exceed my expectations for redwood/ovangkol if I had been the one ordering. Plus you love the way it sounds and plays, right? I think you've got a winner. Keep it and love it and post some new pictures here on the UTGF when you've settled in a bit. :)

You guys are making me feel better-- thanks :-) I think I just need some more time. I don't hate the ovangkol, I just expected something different.
Playing the guitar is such a wonderful experience I know it will end up being fine....

Just went and looked at the pictures. In my opinion this one of the best Ovangkol guitars I have ever seen. Certainly the most unique to my eyes. The set of wood you got sets it apart. I understand expectations can be tough to overcome. However please believe that this is a special looking guitar. From what you said it plays wonderfully so that is what matters most right? You've got a definite winner here.

Glad to hear this. You would be making a massive mistake saying good bye to that guitar.

Hey friend,
That is NO glorified 400, man! That top is beautiful! OK, granted the tone is primary, and I have no doubt that the Taylor tone-tappers decided on it being "premium" tone wood. But c'mon bud, it's a lovely figuring to boot; nothing to be dissatisfied over!
I don't know if you "specified" flamed ovangkol. I had a 410ce LTD, and it had flamed ovangkol back and sides (it's prob still in the classifeds here so take a look if you want). It was pretty, to be sure, but remember the guys who know tone and determine "premium" are listening to the wood more than they are looking. That your guitar sounds great is testament to that. Enjoy the tonal party that guitar is delivering. Pretty, to be sure; but if you truly dig the sound then you are where you want to be :)

Oh good. I was a little worried over at the AGF . . .
Let me tell you, I think your guitar is one of the nicest BTOs I've ever seen. And I think Taylor nailed it with that back wood - it to me looks MUCH nicer than the curly stuff you linked to.
I really do hope you learn to love that guitar!
-
i think your guitar looks nice.
i thought about doing an adi top, but i ended up w/ a "modify a model" 914ce w/ a cedar top.
i LOVE my guitar, and i hope you love yours.
the ovangkol on yours looks great - you can see what a standard 414ce looks like w/ ovangkol.
the flamed ovangkol looks awesome - i have seen versions that show alot of flaming, but it looks like yours actually matches the adi.
and there's nothing stopping you from getting another one :)
-
zee,
pete's guitar has a sinker top & a florentine cutaway -
the one with the adi top is a link of a different guitar
this is pete's - great looking top & nice figuring on the ovangkol too, imho

hi pete,
i just wanted to say congrats on the guitar &, from what i've read, it sounds like it has great tone & a fantastic-playing neck -
undoubtedly, going with different woods (flamed maple or walnut) would change the tone of the guitar & i believe that when
woods are selected for a BTO, especially a highly-optioned one, that the stiffness & density has a good bit to do with it too.
to me, the guitar looks great, but i guess the question that only you can answer is that if the back & sides were closer
to what you envisioned aesthetically, but the tone seemed a bit 'underwhelming' would you be more likely to keep on
playing the guitar as much as possible, hoping that it might 'open up' & that the tone would be favorable as well ???
again, it sounds like to me that you love a good 90+ % of the guitar, if not more & i don't mean to try to persuade you
one way or the other, as you should be happy with what you receive, especially for the $ being spent here, but i've
seen a person play an absolutely stunning adi rosewood OM that listed for as much as a DDSM, only to find that the
finish on the top was not an 'absolutely dead-perfect mirror' (it was nitro) & after asking that the guitar be sent back
in hopes of having the finish redone (which would entail pulling the bridge & neck), that when the replacement arrived,
the finish on the top still was not glass-smooth & mirror perfect, but the tone was just not 'there' on the second guitar :(
i hope that everything works out the way you'd like it to & if it's any consolation, imho, i would feel
very fortunate & blessed to own that guitar & be able to do what do what you're doing with it now
take care

As one ovangkol/sinker owner to another, I think that your guitar is beautiful. I've seen posts that prefer the looks of yours over mine, and vice versa. The truth of the matter is that neither is better, and it comes down to a matter of personal taste. I know that my guitar's ovangkol has plenty of flame, but at a certain angle, it looks very similar to yours. As for the sinker, both tops came from the same tree - it's a box of chocolate - you never know what you're gonna get. I'm glad you like the tone and playability, because that's what is most important to me as well. I test drove this combo before I BTO'd it, and regardless of aesthetics, the sound continues to quicken my pulse.
Enjoy your new baby - she'll never let you down!
