Title: Another interesting guitar shop...
Post by: Captain Jim on January 24, 2014, 06:56:22 PM
I am still looking for a decent gigbag for my RainSong Shorty.  With other shopping on the agenda today, I put in my request for a stop at Rainbow Guitars in Tucson, our current location.  Nice store!  And an excellent selection of Taylors in their acoustic room, including quite a few high end models... a couple beautiful all koa guitars, a PS with a Florentine cutaway, some lovely 900s, and an 812-12 fret that was SO sweet.  I spent a moment with an 856 - my wife was taken with the 12 string.  Oh, and the new T5z - it plays "like buttah!"  ("It looks so small," my wife said... perspective.)

No gigbag that made the cut, but a very enjoyable time!

Best wishes,
Captain Jim

When I traveled for a living I spent much time in independent little music shops all over the place. There were all sorts of treasures to be found and fondled in those stores.  I also hit the pawn shops and antique malls as I could.
Good memories for sure.

Glad to hear you are able to play some Taylor's out there. That 812 sounds sweet. Just picked up a 12-fret 522 myself. It rumbles!

Stay safe!

Hi Jim, Glad you got to stop into Rainbow. I pop in there pretty often as I also live in Tucson. I'm usually shopping next door at the homebrewing store. My two favorite hobby stores side by side. Love going into the acoustic room on a quiet weekday. BTW, they have more Taylor's still in the boxes in the back.

Jim, Did you get over to the Folk Shop across the street from Rainbow? Interesting instruments in there. May be another  place to check on gig bags.

Love the gigbag idea for your rainsong...i bought a taylor t5 gigbag to put my martin 000-15sm in, and with the all hog martin being so light, it's like have a full-sized hog gs mini to go on outdoor adventures with :)

Hmmm... T5 bag... I hadn't thought of that.  My T5 is at home, 1348 miles away.  I know it is not as deep as the RS Shorty, but an interesting possibility.  Thanks!  I'll check measurements.

I was surprised my 000sm fit in it, I thought the bag would be a little shallow.  It was somewhat snug at first, but I guess the bag stretched a little and now it seems like the bag was meant for this guitar...

would that be a T5X gig bag that looks sort of like the one for the big baby

or, the TaylorWare T5 hardbag ???

i've seen the TaylorWare hardbags used for T5s & SBs on the load-out for a RoadShow -
marc seal must be a tetris master, in addition to being a guitar virtuoso :)

I didn't realize Taylor doesn't post size specs (body width/length) of the T5 on their site.  A search on the internet passed a lot of time, with no definitive results.  My T5 is at home (a long ways away); guess it will have to wait.  For now.

the T5 body specs are on page 8
http://www.taylorguitars.com/sites/default/files/TaylorGuitars-2014PriceList.pdf?utm_source=Website&utm_ medium= Guitar%2BMenu2BDropdown%2BLink&utm_content=PDF&utm_campaign=Price%2BList%2B2013%2BDownload (http://www.taylorguitars.com/sites/default/files/TaylorGuitars-2014PriceList.pdf?utm_source=Website&utm_ medium= Guitar%2BMenu2BDropdown%2BLink&utm_content=PDF&utm_campaign=Price%2BList%2B2013%2BDownload)

overall length
6 string          40 3/4"
it looks like the 12 string has been dropped as a standard model

body length   20"
body width    16"
body depth    2 1/3"
scale length   24 7/8"

frets               21
neck width     1 11/16"

the string gauge & type can be found for all models here also, although it'd be nice if these
specs were added to the respective model pages on the 'site, as it'd be a lot easier to find

http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/electric/t5 (http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/electric/t5)
the T5 pages currently have no spec list & the T5 classic spec on the main page needs to be
changed from ovangkol (it is a mahogany shown & is stated on the classic page), i'm guessing
that this area is still undergoing updating/revisions & hopefully the 12 string is still a SMO :-\

Here's some pics of my martin 000-15sm in my Taylor (what I think is a) T5 gig bag.  The main reason I chose this bag over say a big baby bag was because it has actually padded back pack straps, while the other bags had these three hooks you could use to rig a back pack.  But this bag is just a larger version of the mini bag with the those backpack straps, which I loved when I had my hog mini (which I parted with because I wanted a normal scale length like what this martin provides).  And since this all hog guitar is so light, it literally is like having gs mini to tote around.  Not sure how hard I could drop it in this bag with damage, but it's the perfect way to tote it around.

Thanks, Michael and GuitarsRSoAwesome,

I couldn't find those size specs - silly me, looking for T5 specs under the T5 specs.  ;D  The RS Parlor measures out 15" lower bout, 20" body length, overall length just under 39"... sounds like the T5 case might be close... IF the difference in body depth could make up for the difference in lower bout width.

I will be attending a Road Show a week from tomorrow... maybe I'll get lucky and there will be a T5 with a gigbag I can actually check out.  Ohhhh, I just realized that is St. Patrick's Day.  I better plan to be home early... like New Years Eve - too many amateurs out there.  ;)

Best wishes,
Jim

That's a really good point about driving on St. Patty's.  Some towns are really bad for it, like Savannah, GA!

I just took some measurements that I hope help...

Measurements of bag's interior:

Depth tapers from bottom to top
Depth at bottom bout:  4 1/4 inches
Depth at upper bout: 3 1/2 inches
Depth at top of bag: 3 inches
Interior width at bottom bout: 15 1/2 inches
Interior width at upper bout: 11 inches
Interior Length: 42 inches

Measurements on my 000-15sm as applies to the bag, which shows why it worked out well.

Bottom bout depth 4 inches
Upper bout depth: tapers to 3 inches at neck
Bottom bout width across top at widest point: 15 inches
Upper bout width at widest point: 10.5 inches
Guitar total length: 40 inches
