Title: Trouble keeping my GS mini in tune
Post by: Guitar Cowboy on September 26, 2016, 06:43:42 PM
My GS mini seems to have trouble  staying in tune, especially  compared to my other Taylor's.  Is this because it is a lower end guitar or is there  something I should have looked at?  I have elixir mediums on it  and I  am using a Snark headstock tuner and/or tuning by ear. Tuning adjustments are also needed when I use a capo and that is not generally needed on my other Taylors. Any insight anyone could provide would be appreciated.  Thanks.

If its new. Try stretching out the strings a little bit and retuning and repeating the process until it stops or nearly stops going out of tune as bad as it used to. I had the same problem with my mini and now it stays in tune. Maybe someone else might have a better answer but I would start with the strings and go from there.

My GS Mini was bought new almost three years ago.

It lives in it's gig bag and doesn't get a lot of play time.

When I do get it out, I never need to tune it. It's always stays in perfect tune. Well maybe a tweak.

My Snark tuner is gathering dust.

I have a Holden Village GS Mini, I love it, but you do have a point. About a year ago, I moved it and my other guitars into a room in which I closely control the temperature and humidity, 70*f and 40%. That alone helps a bunch. Apparently, due to its construction, it seems to be more susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity than other models.

Thanks,  I'll try stretching strings a bit more and see if she settles in. Yes, she's  new  and I recently  replaced the HD lights with mediums.

A new mini should have shipped with medium strings unless there was a recent change? Stretching the strings should do it, neither of our mini's needs excessive tuning, and they aren't getting that much play so it is a while between sessions with them.
As for the capo, it could be that your capo doesn't play well with that particular neck? Or it could just be the new strings? Again, my basic kaiser capo seems to work okay on the mini-fwiw

My experience is also that the GS Mini does seem more sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. When it stays in consistent environment tuning stays more stable.
