1976 Taylor 815
« on: January 09, 2014, 12:56:45 PM »
Happy New Year all
I don't post to often, but it seems I made a few Taylor trades and buys last year. and I'll talk about the most recent accusistion.
The guitar is an early Taylor, I've been wanting one for a long time and found the one that would fill the bill.I know they were established in 1974 so this 2nd year production.
1976 815  s/n 253.   This was an ebay find , it lived in San Degio Calif. after some chat with prior owner all sounded good.
Indian Rosewood with Sitka spruce top. Jumbo. I believe Bob Taylor may have had his hands on this one, A few things about the 76.
The neck that put Taylor on the map, slim carved all the way up, with 1 11/16 nut. frets look as new, finger board is perfect, with a nice mahogany, feels like an electric.  The guitar was used heavely with some top wear that was touched up by the factory,(prior owner had done) nice work for laquer. Has a early under saddle pickup install looks original? Body depth is deeper that current models standard.
The mustach bridge is a classic, fits the jumbos nicely, The wood inlay center back strip and bottom side is not seen on our Taylors today.
The shape of the headstock was of the original shape. I think it changed around 91. gold schaller tuning machines.
when I removed the truss rod cover I noticed the serial # 253 penciled on back side.

The guitar is all 800 as same , ivorid bound all around, with flat finish over face of peg head overlay like up to like 2013, this is 38 years old now . the Sitka top has aged to a beautiful dark orange.
No cracks , just shows carfull use over the years besides the heavey strummer that original owned it. Its in remarkable good shape needing no work at all.
I changed the strings and put a polish job on.
Took these pictures when changing strings.
I have many Taylors and just love the Vib of this one. It will be stored and savored from now on.
Enjoy the pics I'll try to post them now, hope they are not to big. I took 44 or so, fun to look at it from all differant lighting and angles.

Wowzers, what a find. It looks like it's in great shape. Lucky you. You have a piece of Taylor history. Take good care of it and enjoy it.

congrats on the 815 & thanks for sharing the pics RT 8)

just one question -
i was wondering if you know what the block is for that's transversely mounted
underneath the fretboard extention, that seems to be attached to the brace ???

if it were a popsicle-style brace, i would think it would be longer -
maybe, it's just a reinforcement to strengthen that area underneath the top, thinking that
someone that bought the guitar new back then might  try to put a set of these strings on it :o

just curious -
play on :D

Great looking guitar.  Is this the same guitar used by Bjorn Ulvaeus in Abba's "The Winner Takes is All" video?

Well...that is one swell guitar.  I'm new to Taylor guitars myself...but old to many, many others.

Lots of collector/players would love to have that guitar.
