Wood Tuner Buttons??
« on: May 30, 2013, 08:07:48 PM »
Anyone installed wood tuner buttons on their Taylor recently?  If so, comments on looks, quality, etc?  How easy are they to install?  I'm looking at ones offered by Nichols Inlays...
Thanks for feedback y'all

When I first got my 816ce, I replaced the gold tuner buttons with ebony.  I think it's a nice upgrade as it matches the fretboard.

Very nice!!  Are those from Nichols?  How do they install?  My tuners do not have the screw on the end like some tuners do.

I got them from the Classifieds on another acoustic guitar forum, but Nichols offers a similar product, I do believe.  Installation is simple.  Detune your guitar to take the stress off the tuners, unscrew the small screw on the end of the tuning button, put on new tuning button, screw the screw back in, retune.  Voila.  Takes about 5 minutes.

If your tuners do not have screws on the end of the button, you may not be able to do this modification without replacing the tuners.  What kind of guitar do you have?

1982 710. No screws on the end of the tuners. If the screw was there...simple as it gets. But without the screw is the question. I think I will just email Nichols...probably best way to get right to it. Thx.

Being an '82 model, if these are the original tuners, I'd personally leave them alone unless there is something mechanically defective.  If you're going to replace the entire tuner, I believe Gotoh makes a 510 with ebony buttons.

Agreed...probably not going to change them out, although I really like the look of the wood buttons.  The current tuners are in great shape and work fine....just always tinkering with something.

Hmmm....while it's on my mind...I'm waiting for a set of Rosewood buttons from Bill Nichols, for my Yairi DY-70. They should be really nice.

NOW...here's the wish-list: I wonder if anyone has/sells wood buttons for Grover Minis? My "new" 655 is crying out for a set of wood tuner buttons ;D. Bill Nichols doesn't make them, but I'll bet someone does. Just a matter of who??
God Bless and Keep Pickin' away at it!

Steely Glen, I know this is an old post, but there has been a recent discussion of tuner replacements.
I think this looks really classy.

Old is an understatement.  Steely Glen hasn't even been on the site since May 2019!
