Thought I would be happy...
« on: August 09, 2017, 04:56:32 PM »
So now.. being a new and not knowing about all guitars, I made a purchase on what I thought would be a cool guitar that would keep me satisfied for a long time. Taylor 224ce. It's really nice, just that I recently went into my local big box store and saw a 712e-12fret. I don't know what it was about it, just that I really enjoyed playing it. It's way more money to justify to the boss (wifey), but dang... I can't stop thinking about it. It's smaller than my 224, not by much. And it looks very different. Anyway... hoping to hear some of you have been thru this. Hoping to hear that you didn't make the change and kept the first guitar you got...

Welcome to the world of Taylor guitars and GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome-yes, there's even a name/acronym for it). While there are some who are enamored with their first purchase and somehow manage to be loyal while letting no other guitar drive the relationship asunder, most of us get the itch and scratch it. I started out around 2006 with a Taylor 455 (which I still wish I hadn't sold), and bought/sold many other guitars since then until arriving at my current crop...

IMO, the 712 12-fret is a great guitar, but not as all-purpose as the 224. If it were me, I would hold onto the 224, and possibly add the 712 at a later date.

2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany

2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

I know what you mean. I played a 712ce 12-fret today at Elderly. Sounded great, fingerpicking. Looks awesome. But, I do love what I have.

Never know. You might be the exception to the practice of guitar acquisition. However, at the risk of stating the obvious, acquiring guitars may bring pleasure but will not bring happiness. That only comes from appreciating whatever you've got...

Welcome to a world of peace and harmony; you are embarking on a world that can provide a lifetime of enjoyment. People are all made differently. Guitars are all different. The real trick is to find what works for you. Hang the cost. 5 years from now you will continue to derive countless hours of pleasure from a well-made instrument, and you will have long forgotten the cost. And, a talented lucky few, may even find a worthwhile vocation. The journey of one thousand miles begins with a single step - you have taken that step.

Correct, you will like the sound of it better with more than one very nice guitar.

For 10+ years I played only a 110.  Last year I attended a Taylor event at a local dealer and since then have had a strong case of GAS. I have two of the 712 models, both steel and nylon string. The 712/12/12 (12 string 12 fret) limited edition is a cannon of an instrument but so far I have resisted the siren call... but my discipline may only last so long.  The new 362 12 fret may pull me in first.

AK, welcome. I, like many here have travelled your path. I still have my original 314ce, but it isn't my most played Taylor. As I have developed my meager skill set I have found my preferences change. If you don't want to go through a bunch of Taylors, I would recommend holding off a while and playing as many models as you can. Also, a taylor find your fit event could be helpful as well. In my case I ended up preferring the GC 12 fret size guitars but your journey will be yours. I played the 314ce for about 6 years before GAS got me bad, and have been through quite a few having now settled on my Taylor fleet, for now:)
Good luck,

Guitars are funny things (not to mention their owners ;) ): some speak to us, others are just "meh."  And the more you play and more different ones you try, the more you realize the ones that speak to you are not necessarily price, size, or brand dependent.  It's almost unquantifiable, yet oddly tangible in your mind's eye. (how's that for net gibberish, but I believe it :D )

So yeah, play more, try more, experience more and you eventually realize you really should sell some stuff, and you really should never sell some stuff. But you don't come to that point until you've covered some miles.  I'd personally advise that you enjoy what ya got now and make more music!  You know what is said about that greener grass over yonder ...  :)

Thanks for the much needed responses.

PS. Went back to the Big Box Store and still wanting the 712... but really don't need it.

I lied in my last post... about not needing/wanting a 12 fretter. I've got a 312ce - 12 Fret inbound. Puahaha....

The wife is not going to be happy about this...

So is this one of those "better to beg forgiveness than to ask for permission" things?
