My first time
« on: December 10, 2016, 04:36:34 AM »
My name is Brian. Grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo, NY.  Kicked around in New Mexico and college in Arizona.  While learning guitar I remember strumming through Yamahas, Fenders and Alvarez guitars. But I soundly remember walking into the humidor of an upstate New York shop in 2002 and tried some guitars, that at the time were out of my price range. Hmmmm, Martin..not bad...Gibson, ok...Guild, not bad...but next I picked up a low to mid-range Taylor, man that specific guitar had a renascence that vibrated right through me...I picked up a prettier model with the bindings and inlays, and it did not have the same something...I wish for the life of me I remember what model it is, either a 416ce, 314ce or perhaps a 614ce (I think it is a 416ce). That was the one that got away, I should have put it on lay-away. Now since I am in a position financially, I've been buying different models from different years trying to find her (or something close).  The closest to that magical timbre I have come is my 2003 614ce.  I am still searching.

Welcome to the forum Phantompower.  Searching is a lot of fun, I have not stopped.  I have some real keepers, but I keep searching.

PhanatomPower - welcome to the Forum clan -- and the joy of discovering Taylors.  My first was a 314ce -- then came across a 1997 414ce on Reverb.  While I love the 314 -- the 414 has stollen my heart (or music ear)!!
2015 Taylor 314ce
1997 Taylor 414ce
2005 Zager ZAD50CE

Welcome PP-

Best of luck in the search for your "white whale". If it was a 416 from a few years back, it might have been that marvelous sitka spruce/ovangkol combination that grabbed your ear. I've never played a bad one. I understand that Taylor will not be using ovangkol on its 400s in the future, so you may want to check out a 414 or a 416.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood
