cought up in numbers
« on: May 20, 2015, 08:05:44 PM »
It seems I have got myself caught up in the numbers game. 800, 600, 400, 500 .. whew. it can get complicated. So.. I went to the local GC today and played all the Taylors with series starting in the 4, 5 600s. Still a bit bewildered I grabbed the 314ce. WOW!!.. It sang to me. An old saying I heard in the Navy came back to ."KISS" (keep it simple stupid). Did not buy it yet but when I can... I will. Heck gang.. I'm a sit around the house playen to my dogs and Wife kinda guy. And when my musician friends come over I hand them a guitar and we jam a bit. I truly have no need for a 3k guitar.
Thanks for listening

The good thing is if you really prefer the 314 you can find one used for the price of a new 214.  They're out there...take a look around :)

Good for you Jimmer! You like what you like, and the 314 is a honey of a guitar. Have fun!

I love my 314ce. It just sounds better with age and if I could only have one it would be down to that or the 414ce, both versatile and with great but different voices.
You can't go wrong with the 314, great guitar for the money.

The 314's are fine guitars, and a lot of people like their sound as well as their price point.  If it works for you, it works.  This isn't an arms race, and you need to select the right tool for the job you have at hand.

I know several local musicians who can easily afford higher series Taylor's, but have a 314ce for gigging because that is where the dents and dings usually come from.  My 414 fills that role for me, and was mentioned 414's are pretty affordable used too.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

I've played, and replayed tons of Taylor's, and other brands too. Even though I've had loose money freed up at times, nothing has sounded so much better than my 312ce that I felt I needed it. My cats would never hear a difference.

When we're honest with ourselves in the Taylor line at least, there are diminishing returns sonically as you move up the line from the 3xx/4xx series, as far as having a satisfying guitar to play.

Actually, I don't know if I can tell the difference in the great feeling I have between 1) playing the models I am blessed to own, and 2) seeing a young woman gush over a 114, and mean it.  8)

There's something really satisfying about appreciating and not yearning. And admirable. I've gotten to that point myself now, being satisfied beyond measure, but it took a bit more time and money in my case.

I can tell a definite difference in the 100/200 and my 314ce. I'm pretty sure the neck is a different width, if I recall correctly.

I have A/B'd my 314ce with my friend's 414ce and I couldn't tell much of a difference except he had his action set way lower than I like. The strings all buzzed and I didn't like it at all. He also had very light strings and it didn't seem to put out much volume. It looks beautiful and it works fine for him, though.

I haven't really sat down with the 400/500/600/700/800 yet, but I do know I played a 716ce at a Road Show once and I still have dreams about it. But I've never had the chance to compare one of those to my 314ce.

This, right here, is golden: simple truth that can be applied in so much of what we get consumed with today.  So glad that someone is glad :D
...and yes, I, too, can be a slow learner ;)
