GC8 - Where in the line-up?
« on: January 19, 2015, 08:15:50 AM »
I recently picked up a used 2012 GC8.  I can't quite figure out where it fits in Taylor's line-up.  It's a slot head, 14 fret, CV bracing, no cutaway or electronics.  Has the ivoroid binding and abalone ring of an 812, but it has plain 1/4" fret markers, not the fancy wings of the other 8 series, and a rosewood headstock overlay.  Can anyone shed light on this guitar?

Thanks,
Don

Sure, the GC8 was part of the Pure Acoustic series that Taylor ran for several years. From the 500-800 models, all the appointments were identical. The only differences were the tone woods based on the number: 5=mahogany back and sides, 6= maple back and sides, 7=rosewood with a cedar top, 8= rosewood with a spruce top. I believe that the later 8s also featured CV bracing. Taylor has since discontinued the series by allowing folks to order the standard series with or without cutaway or electronics.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Thanks SF.  It's a great guitar and exactly what I was looking for.

Let's not forget about the "lowly" GC3(w/sapele b/s) and GC4(w/ovangkol b/s)!  The acoustic series went from 3-8, not just 5-8.
There are also GA's, GS's, and DN's with their own acoustic series's.  I don't think there were any GO's though.

Understood- I only mentioned the 5-8s, because they shared the same cosmetic appointments while the 3s and 4s did not.

the current model closest to the GC8 is the 812
http://www.taylorguitars.com/guitars/acoustic/812

in addition to the differences in aesthetics (ebony/ab rosette & fretmarkers)
there have been changes to the bracing, wood thicknessing, finish,
adhesives & it has a solid (paddle) headstock, rather than slotted

congrats on the GC8, don, & welcome to the forum :)
