I've had a SDW for years. Never was happy with the balance between strings. Noticeably weaker signal on the D,G,& B strings. Could be just a bad unit. Never tried it on my mini. Had to do a little triming of wood on the bottom side, to get it to fit the Martin I used to have.

I never liked the SD woody. The one I used had poor balance and was noisy.
That little clip in jobber for the mini sound ok enough for the bar or coffeehouse, but is not useful for recording.
It's the danger that makes things fun.

I just need it for live use. I record with mics. Any other low budgets pickups that would fit in the sound hole for under or around $50?

Might as well sound good, live. I use this pickup. http://www.amazon.com/Pure-Mini-Acoustic-Guitar-Pickup/dp/B000P5OULA/ref=sr_1_1/184-3524124-9701945?ie=UTF8&qid=1382906741&sr=8-1&keywords=k+%26+k+pure+mini
Easy installation. Run thru a preamp, the sound is really good. I use the Berhinger ADI-21. Less than a buckfifty for both.

If you're looking for a sound hole pickup, I'd recommend the LR Baggs M1 or M80. IMO, the best things out there. You'd have to make sure the SH of a mini will accommodate.

+2 on the Pure Mini's, I have them on my Guild run through a Pure XLR Preamp, I've tried several sound hole Pu's including the Baggs, Fishman's, Markley's and wasn't happy until I went with the Pure Mini's, easy to install too...
