NNAFD - having fun
« on: November 06, 2016, 08:54:13 AM »
I knew that title would get you scratchin' your head. Hopefully you won't be too disappointed in opening this thread. NNAFD =New Native American Flute Day.
I started into NAF about a year ago. It has been a fun journey so far. But, they are worse than having GAS. They are beautiful instruments with voices to match. Because each one is a different key, you HAVE to have several :). Having a formal music background, this is an adjustment. But, I'm learning and having fun. Mine are in the keys of F#m, Gm, and Bm, from front to back. Gotta pick up a high-Gm pocket flute in the next couple of months. Anyway, had to share.....it's all about the music, isn't it?! Oh, and my hubby made the flute rack for me.

Very cool, Susie!  The traditional decorations add a nice artistic touch to them -- in the same vein (although not as elaborate) as the Aboriginal decorations on didgeridoos.  Those real turquoise beads on the longest one?

I don't seem to do well with woodwind instruments but it sounds like you've taken to them quite well.  Good luck with it, and enjoy!

Now we'll have to coin another acronym for you:  NAFAS  (Native American Flute Acquisition Syndrome). ;)

Thanks Tim. Yes, that's turquoise on the F#m.
My past includes alto saxophone and flute, so I've been searching for a direction to go with that. Have tried tin whistle and recorder, but they didn't resonate (pun intended) with me. The NAF seems to be peaking my interest.
NAFAS seems appropriate!

It's good you're finding an outlet for that interest in these flutes.  My earliest formal training was with trumpet; but I never seem to circle back to that...

Yeah, I didn't want to do the band instruments again, but was searching for something more "personal". I think I found it. Nice thing is, the dulcimer crowd is going in this direction, so there are workshops for them at the dulcimer events I attend. Plus, my sister has gotten into it too. So, when we get together, we get to play together.

Well, that's nice that you and your sister can enjoy it together.  I've had a few folks around my houses in Texas suggest that we start playing guitar together; but being on the road so much it doesn't materialize...  My brother is reluctant to play guitar with me as well; not sure if he thinks his skill level hasn't progressed enough yet or what...?  He just says, "I only play for my own enjoyment."  I suppose my ribbing him for never having learned a song in its entirety doesn't help either, though... ::)

They look very cool TaylorGirl,

It's good you're finding an outlet for that interest in these flutes.  My earliest formal training was with trumpet; but I never seem to circle back to that...

I've been playing trumpet in a soul band for over 20 years so I guess I never circled away from it!

Congrats Susie,
How exciting! Those are gorgeous instruments and I am sure sound wonderful. Especially nice that you have your Sister to play with.
I played Clarinet growing up, but like Tim, I haven't circled back in that direction, yet anyway!
